rx-7's have some of the best brakes you can get, they are even good enough for some mild track use and regular auto-cross use, four piston up front, singles in the rear on mine, i think they have two piston in the 3rd gen and trust me, when i slam on my brakes, you almost fly out of the chair, seatbelt keeps you strapped in and i have no abs. just because they arent slotted and vented, doesn't mean they arent good.(you dont want alot in the rear, you'll lock em up and end up ass backwards)

the first clutch I've changed ever, was for my fc, and that was a breeze, drop the driveshaft, drop the tranny, and your right there, plenty of room to work with too. unreliable engine?(notice how you always hear from someone that knew someone that had one blow up on them.) they're as reliable as any other engine, name one engine you can redline repeatedly daily and still go 200k+ miles without any aftermarket parts or balancing(n/a, turbos last up to 170k, some over 220k with stock internals) so reliability is as good as any other engine, in fact, you really do need to redline them daily to break the carbon loose from the burning oil, thats the only pitfall worse than a piston.

yeah they burn gas, but you don't get a sports car to conserve gas and drive conservatively....I'm sure as hell i didn't. a 2nd gen has a slight rear weight bias, apparently it didn't work to well or something(maybe marketing, unless we have a degree in something relative to this, nobody can say) so they went back to 50/50, i personally would believe a 50/50 would work better, if you read up, the sw20 has under-steering problems. rx-7's stock with 265(FD, and they are all twin turbo. there is NO N/A 3rd gen or piston powered rx.) at the crank, pull 13/14's that's the slow end, with mine at 300, im expecting low 13's and into the 12's on the 1/4 mile, but I'm not building it for the drag, i'm building it for auto-cross/road racing(not the same as street racing). mine is a pitiful 15/16 range.

edit: i just hate how people buy a pure-bred sports car, just to look good. its like buying a mansion and living in an apartment in downtown.

I know, but he was talking about a 1st-through-3rd run. I can easily imagine the RX7 pulling on the bike upwards of 100 or so, but that's hardly "whooping" if you started from a stop or slow roll.

My aunt had one. I was looking at buying one for a while. I'm not saying they blow up on a regular basis, but the MR2s are almost Corolla reliable. It's hard to find any story about someone having one blow up on them that was honest mechanical failure and not someone's screwup. You just have to keep a closer eye on an RX7.

Again, I won't even try to fight the ease-of-wrenching thing...the RX7 runs circles around any MR2 in that contest.

Uh, 4AGE? Slightly higher redline, too...(yes, I know that the RX7's redline is more of a suggestion, and the 4AGE is more of a mechanical limit)

There's burning gas, and then there's burning gas needlessly. Take a look at the Vette...fast as anything, but you can cruise on the freeway all day long at nearly 30mpg. Compare that to the 80's RX7 I test drove...almost no power, but boy did it guzzle fuel.

The rotary engines just don't develop enough power to justify their fuel consumption. Great power-to-weight for their time, but piston engines passed them.

Look, I don't want to turn this into an RX-7 vs. MR2 debate. I think the RX7 is a fine car. And the MR2 has plenty of faults...twitchy handling (snap oversteer, the initial understeer->mid-corner oversteer inherent to MR, and crippled in the later mk2s to purely excessive understeer), underpowered mk1, overpriced and overweight mk2 (INCREDIBLE brakes though), and general lack of practicality and difficulty of maintenance.
 
um....88 and before redline at 7, and from 89 and beyond, they redline at 8. it took until the ae101/111 to hit the same redline as the 89 rx.

if a 13B has such horrible power to weight, then why would they be highly regarded in the aviation community? as well as reliability in the aviation community? don't see a 4age powering aircraft. weighs 170lbs, producing 160hp. almost a 1:1 p:w ratio, that is without water radiator, oil radiator, fuel, and things like that.(its probably closer to 250lbs honestly)

i too concur that the mr2 is a great car, as well as your points on both model mr2's. its just some of the folks in here think the mr2 totally outclasses the rx-7's, but they don't. both do have faults and both have pluses. rx does consume quite a large amount of fuel for the vehicle size and engine size. mid rears have great handling if the suspension is tuned properly, thats probably the biggest reason the mr2 has horrible understeer.(not saying the rx's is super all great above all else either)

Just about every car out there made I would think.

Think about all the people out there with beaters with automatics that don't know anything but put the pedal to the floor when they need to pull into traffic or go up an on ramp with their little 4 cyl. The factory setup will take any car to the red line on a daily basis if you are heavy on the throttle.

I take even my manual 5SFE Camry to redline when I need to accelerate quickly and it's got 150k miles with no major issues. There is no harm in that, the automatic would be doing the same thing, and if it was harmful, the over cautious factory tune with an automatic wouldn't allow it. Figure 100% of people out there with automatics who step on it when they need to are doing it all the time.

Anyway, my +1 to the MR2 comment was more in regards to MR2 > Fierro, I thought it was strange that the RX7 was included in the comparison myself. I'd take both the MR2 and RX-7, I'm finding the rotary concept more intriguing every day.

So big no on the 20b huh? Can't even get 3 rotor e shafts and housing pieces and build your own? Harness and computer wouldn't be a problem, most likely a FD with a 20b would be have a stand alone harness and ECU anyway. I understand many of the ignition components like injectors and stuff are unique to the Cosmo and extremely difficult if not impossible to get though...
 
no, i said 200+ and above, a n/a rotary will do it, and keep going without a problem. no knocking(rotaries can knock, but because of the design, they are very unlikely to).

yeah a 20B is very expensive, you could get the triple rotor e-shaft somewhere, but it wont be cheap to assemble it, lol yeah you would have to manufacture your own harness and tuning the ecu would be rather difficult, the turbo on something the size of that, quite large. the injectors and ignition are the same as any other rotary, except three of each, three coils(six spark plugs though, same type as the 13b though), three sets of primary and secondary injectors.
