Nahh. I have done that many times. No one wants to risk their job right now.

i am thinking of calling back and demand to speak with the manager to somehow force him/her to retrieve it for me. or i report that it was stolen at the restaurant... maybe that's too extreme.

Just report it missing and move on. You don't know who could have copied your number down.

Why didn't you call your CC company to cancel the CC? What's the problem?

WTF. Just call your card company, tell them what happened and have them cancel the card. What's the big deal?

Amex has always overnighted a new card to me for free whenever i've had an issue (cracked card, etc).

If they're not open, how are you going to speak to the manager? If you can't wait, then call and cancel it.
