So, I just used an iBook for 6 hours...

This would've been mildly excusable if this were a high school. This was the University of Maryland. My first computer ran OS6. I hung with it until the iMac happened; that's when I knew Apple was heading down a slippery slope, sacraficing functionality (in that example, the ability to get data off the damned computer. Nobody had CD burners, Apple didn't even offer them. USB flash drives were unheard-of) in favor of friendliness (OMMMMMG IT'S CUTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!)

another point...i own a iBook too...i wouldn't use it to work on for 6 hours straight either... it does get hot. I'm sure a powerbook is built more for these intensive tasks.

the wife will use it for her freelance work for hours on end...i really dont know how she uses it with quark, photoshop and freehand all gong at once with that small screen. I guess she is just that good🙂

What, I actually sat down and used the damn thing, and made a post about what I percieved as serious issues with it. Isn't this what ATOT is about? Oh, wait, I'm an assclown because you don't agree with me. THAT'S what ATOT is about.

<-- Picks up iBook, to adress EyeMWing's concerns....

1) WHY IS IT SUCH A PITA TO GET A CONSOLE???

Open laptop, click "finder" click "Applications", click "Utilities", click "Terminal". Time to open a console: 7 seconds.

2) Why is it a convention in the mac world for all text to be LIGHT BLUE and the display to be very bright and washed out? My eyes were hurting just looking at the thing after awhile.
Um, it's not. Still looking at the finder here. The text is black. The default text color in that console you had so much trouble finding is, surprise: black. The standard text color in XCode is also: black. The only thing that's light blue are the scrollbars.

3) The keyboard had no feel
That's subjective, but I've never had a problem with it. It feels as nice as any other laptop keyboard.

4) THE TRACKPAD IS FVCKING USELESS.
Like the keyboard, it works as well as any other trackpad. It works better than the trackpad on my Dell laptop.

4) For the love of god, copy and paste should be ctrl-c and ctrl-v. Why the fvck do you insist on using the damned apple key? Could you maybe move the apple key to the ctrl key's position?
You really think that Apple should change something that they've had as standard for over a decade, that all thier users are used to, because it takes PC users an hour or two to get used to a different shortcut key? Really, the Apple key is a better shortcut key - it's closer to the other keys that you use it in combination with and your hand doesn't have to stretch as far.

5) GIVE ME A GODDAMNED SECOND MOUSE BUTTON. There's NO FVCKING REASON that I should have to ctrl-click on stuff.
I guess you can blame the iBook for that one, since it's not always reasonable to just plug in a mouse while you're using a laptop.

7) The tabletop was DAMN HOT by the end of the competition. The *TABLETOP*. The laptop itself was even hotter.
Eh, laptops get warm. Unless it's making your hands uncomfortable or sweaty, what's the big deal?

After reviewing your rant, I've come to the conclusion that you probably got 15/25 in your competition not because of thte big long list of excuses you gave, but because:
1) You're too dumb to figure out how to launch an app by double clicking.
2) You confuse text and scroll bars
3) You cannot adapt to even the smallest differences from exactly what you were expecting (apple+c is not that hard to figure out if you're used to ctrl+c).

Perhaps you're just a lousy programmer?

This rant sucked

Half of your complaints were basically "it's not like Windows! I'm not used to it!"

PWNED

The one thing I don't understand is why after all these years Apple won't make two button mice standard. Maybe it's because they convinced their evangelistas years ago that the two button argument used by Windows people is bogus, so using a second button would be hypocritical. Maybe it's because two buttons would ruin the look of their no-button mice. I don't know, but it's stupid.

Knowing them, they should just make a one button mouse that can be pushed either :

as a one button mouse : straight down

as a two button mouse : push the left side, and push the right side

They coulda told us that, dammit. And the CLI is neither an application nor a utility, it's the goddamned most basic interface to the operating system. I also have a big problem with Microsoft putting it under "Accesssories"

2) Why is it a convention in the mac world for all text to be LIGHT BLUE and the display to be very bright and washed out? My eyes were hurting just looking at the thing after awhile.

Mine was obviously broken, then. The overall color of the display was approximately the color of the chassis. I wasn't using XCode, either. XCode crashed when I launched it by mistake...
3) The keyboard had no feel
That's subjective, but I've never had a problem with it. It feels as nice as any other laptop keyboard.
Granted, it's subjective, but every other notebook I've used has had a tangible key travel.
4) THE TRACKPAD IS FVCKING USELESS.
Like the keyboard, it works as well as any other trackpad. It works better than the trackpad on my Dell laptop.
Negative, ghostrider. It was only capable of large movements, and ignored fine input. HP/Compaq trackpads not only have a scroll bar these days, but also accept fine input without a problem. Can't speak for other manufacturers, but I definitely wasn't expecting to have to give up and use Fn every 15 seconds to use the edit keys to highlight text because the trackpad was worthless.
4) For the love of god, copy and paste should be ctrl-c and ctrl-v. Why the fvck do you insist on using the damned apple key? Could you maybe move the apple key to the ctrl key's position?

Closer to the point that you're supposed to use the same damned finger. My X finger and my apple finger are one and the same. Maybe for people with girly 5 year old sized hands, ctrl is a problem, and I'll admit, I have small hands, but ctrl-*M* isn't a problem at all with one hand. Granted that it's been Apple's standard for over a decade, but WHY THE HELL is it the standard in the first place? I'm fairly certain that the IBM PC introduced the cut and paste keys.
5) GIVE ME A GODDAMNED SECOND MOUSE BUTTON. There's NO FVCKING REASON that I should have to ctrl-click on stuff.

My right hand, in addition to the trauma from having to contort to use the apple key combos, was sweaty as all hell from whatever component was sitting underneath it.

1) I won't even dignify that with an answer. Think about what you just said and what other platforms it applies to.
2) According to your description, my unit's LCD was FUBAR.
3) I've used macs almost all my life, I had no problems with them until this bullshit OSX and over-friendliness and small-hand-cramp keyboards crap started.
4) Or maybe my TEAMMATES are lousy programmers 😛

I accept that we lost, I honestly don't care. A little dissapointed in how pathetically stupid our mistakes were, but VERY dissapointed in UMD. The instruction sheets they gave us telling us how they had things laid out were written for WINDOWS. There were technical difficulties all over the place. They didn't even know WHERE (as in what room) they were going to put 1/4 of us. Our logins didn't even work initially.

Damn right. Of course, now that everyone knows we did piss-poorly, the overwhelming opinion is going to become "Oh, Weng is just trying to displace his shortcomings onto the computer."

Even the winning teams agreed that the macs blew goats.

don't be dissin goats like that, they have higher standards.

Get ready for college, bud. I have an email out to my CompSci director requesting a meeting due to an incompetent instructor.

Try having a programming teacher that names a variable to use in the beginning of a lab (assignment), then calls it something different later in the lab, without telling you. Multiply that times 4 (there were about 4 mistakes in our latest lab), and add in a healthy dose of the instructor getting *extremely* personal when you ask them for help, using big font and exclamation points all over the place as well as saying that only "YOU" are having problems, when they said 10 minutes before that that their inbox was flooded with questions.

Yeah, it blows.

Yeah, it blows.

That's a single prof, not an entire damned department that's had >6 months to plan this.

And there's a damn good reason I'm not going to be a CS major.

J/w what are you going to major in?

:Q Can I have some of what you're having? The terminal isn't some magical place inside the computer, it's just another application. And yes, it's a utility even, you use it to run other applications, it doesn't do anything on its own.

thats funny because they use a synaptics trackpad that is used in every other laptop out there

As far as the review goes,
i kinda got the feel hes describing his own ignorance and lack of knowledge of the os rather than usability problems...

Generally, I am pro-Mac, but I must say that every one of your gripes are spot-on. Especially the console thing. I have no idea why you have to drill so far to get to it. I can only imagine that they don't want the "normal" user to know it's there since it has long been a design goal in Macs to hide the seedy inner workings of the system from the user.
