and i got over 20,000 errors. I'm new to this mem test stuff so I would like to know if this can be fixed or do I return it to my dealer?

Oh, the memory was 2 sticks of 256mb GEiL (PC3200) on my ASUS A7N8X deluxe(not happy so far)

In answer to your question can it be fixed - No it can't. Return it ASAP.

By all means get another brand of mem.

If you're conservative minded you might want to grab some sticks of crucial. If you're more aggressive minded then you might want to go for Corsair XMS 3200 or higher.

Samsung and Infineon are also solid manufacturers.

Set the board to default speeds and to use only a single stick of RAM, then run the test on each stick individually. Would be interesting to see if it's just one stick that's bad, or if they just don't clock as high as rated.

Well I returned the GeIL and went to my local computer store and they only had Generic DDR 333. So I got that, will I see a major performance drop?

I wish I had my DDR 400 :(

System Specs
Antec Truepower 380 watts
ASUS A7N8X nforce2 - Very unstable when playing games
AMD Athlon 2600+
2 sticks of generic 256 DDR 333 (maybe i will return them for the Corsair??)
ATI Radeon 9500 pro - awesome card

you will not see a performance drop at all.. if anything it will improve of that garbage GEIL memory.
differences between brands is about 1% or less. only difference between brands normally is achievable speed and compatibility.

At least you avoided one of the common pitfalls by choosing a good power supply. Bummer about the RAM, and I would get some major-name PC2700 or PC3200 such as Crucial, Corsair or Kingston. The headroom of the PC3200CL2 stuff from Corsair makes it a good choice if you plan to overclock, or if you want to be prepared for a later upgrade to an AMD CPU which has a 400MHz frontside bus speed, like the Barton-core AthlonXP's are rumored to have in the pipeline.

In any case, it's best to run the memory at the same speed as the CPU's frontside bus, so you wouldn't want to run DDR400 RAM at 400MHz anyway until you had a 400MHz-fsb processor to go with it. For this reason, even good PC2700 is suitable for your system as it stands now.

Good luck with the rig, I bet the better RAM will iron out your disappointments.

Thanks guys, You have been very helpful. However I still get cant play any games to play or run 3DMark2001SE without it quitting on me after a couple of minutes of running. Maybe something wrong with the BIOS? The Radeon 9500 pro has the Catalyst 3.0 drivers....something wrong with them? I dunno. I did end up ordering the Cosair DDR 400 memory because I figure it will last me. It should be here around friday or monday. Again thanks for all your help.

How about listing your system specs and we'll see what we can do?

Sounds more like a video driver problem, but you never know.

well i do know this
3dmark2k1SE is meant to be run in DirectX 8.1 and I don't think it can run in DX9, but I could be wrong.

install DX 8.1 and see what happens.

Make sure you don't have all the timings on the memory in the BIOS tweaked out. Since its generic stuff, you might not be able to run it at the lower latencies.

Yeah, 3DMark2001 has no problem with DX9. I have a Radeon 9500 Pro with the Catalyst 3.0 drivers installed and actually gained a few 3DMark points with the upgrade.

Well, a few people are having problems (dx9 and 3dmark2k1)
they did afterall release 3dmark2k1SE because it was made for DX8.1 not regular 8.0a .. apparently that's widespread information anyways..

This could still very easily be a RAM problem. Geil=crap, but Generic=who knows what? May not be able to tell until the Corsair arrives.:(

Don't you guys read the readme.txt that comes with the program MEMTEST86????

It clearly says that test 5 or 6 (i don't remember exactly which test...) may cause some problems with some AMD motherboards or chipsets for the AMD...

Apparently the author of MEMTEST86 used some instructions from the program BXBURN or BURNBX, BURNMX..BURNK7 for one of its tests and it sometimes can give problems, especially on AMD systems..

I have PC2700 DDR TWINMOS with the famous WINBOND (- BH6 ) chips...it overclocks really well , with CAS2...on my asus a7v8 and Antec true power 330 watt.. All first 4 tests in MEMTEST86 work, and than at the end of test 5 or 6 i get a thousand erros.....APPARENTLY this is a fault in the program/incompatibility with the memory controller or chipset....

I am confident that my memory works perfect!! Although i get these thousand errors in memtest86 in that specific test.....

I hope you got some info on that...

take care
