So I just picked up "Train of Thought"

I had no idea how heavy these guys were. I have just listened to the first 2 tracks
"as i am" and "this dying soul". I actually thought they were more like a Pink Floyd
group, mostly slow and mellow. I have to say i'm impressed. Is all their music this
style? I know they have a pretty large catalog.

....dam they have long songs...

Check out "The Mirror" off of Awake, "Beyond this Life" and "Fatal Tragedy" off of SFAM, "War Inside my Head" off of SDOIT.

Checking those out now, but this TOT album is getting better. Just finished listening to Honor Thy Father.

So I take it this album is your first experience with DT?

Edit: If so, go check out

Metropolis Part 1
Learning to Live
Take the Time
Scarred
Hell's Kitchen
Pull Me Under
Under a Glass Moon

Yeah.
I was just checking their website to see if they have ever played a show in my town.

Don't let thier heaviness derail your train of thought😉

"I've lost my thought of train"

Anyway, Dream Theater does rule. I've got Train of Thought, Scenes From a Memory, and A Change of Seasons. All great albums. I really need to pick up the rest of their stuff.

How could I have forgotten ACOS. Damn.

ToT is unusually heavy for them. They've been slowly gravitating away from prog rock and into real heavy stuff with their latest offerings, but this one is by far way heavier than any other stuff they've done. And if you thought the first two tracks were heavy, just wait until you get to "Honor Thy Father!"

Also check out Scenes From a Memory and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, both are still pretty heavy without being as brutal as ToT. And their albums before that, like Awake, Images and Words and A Change of Seasons are not that heavy at all, but still really really good.
