Trust me, after a week you'll realize that you not only don't care - but that the job sucked any way and good riddance.

If it was a summer job, well summer is over now any way - so double who cares.

go eye for an eye on your manager. damage him for 100 bucks + whatever you feel your job was worth. and for godsakes be smart about it and makes sure you leave no evidence/get taped. good luck to you.

So for some extra cash next year I decided to get a second job over the summer. The movie theater seemed like a cool place to work, since I'd get all those nice employee benefits (free movies, posters, popcorn, etc). I've been a model employee for the whole summer, always showing up on time and never breaking any rules whatsoever. However, an accident occurred which was not my fault and now I'm taking the fall for it.

So last tuesday someone paid me with a 100 dollar bill (I was working concessions). At intervals throughout the day, managers come around and take some of the money out of your drawer, usually just the big bills like 20's and up. So the manager comes around, picks up the hundred, and I don't think twice about it.

That night, after my shift was over, I was told that I was exactly 100 dollars short on my register. When I told the night manager who counted my drawer about the 100 dollar bill, he said that he had never gotten a 100 dollar bill from my register that day. He told me not to worry and that it had probably just been accidentally placed in one of the other registers. It seemed fine to me, and I left.

Fast forward to thursday: I show up that morning for work only to find that my timecard is gone. I asked the manager present where it was, and he told me that they never found that 100 dollars and that my timecard has been revoked. I talked to the boss and she said that they would be viewing the security tape of the concessions counter to see if anyone else besides me or the manager had gone into my register that day, and to call them later that night after they had watched the whole thing. She assured me that no one believed that I had taken the bill (which I DID NOT, for those of you who are still in doubt) and that they would do their best to find out what happened.

So later that night I call them at the time they told me to. This is pretty much how the conversation went with the other boss (not the chick, who is cool):

Me -- So, did you find anything?
Him -- No, the only people going in and out of your drawer that day were you and the manager.
Me -- So the bill was lost after it was taken from my drawer, correct?
Him -- Well the money in the drawer is your responsibility.
Me -- ... But it was taken out of my drawer by the manager. That makes it his responsibility.
Him -- No, not really. We're going to have to let you go.

:|

So even though everyone at the theater believes that I didn't take the money and that I did nothing wrong, I get the boot because someone has to take the fall. Is this right?

Cliffs:
-- $100 goes missing from my register at movie theater
-- not my fault
-- I get fired anyways

$hit rolls down hill. Trick is not to be at the bottom.

He was last seen on his knees, head bobbing . . .

Yeah seriously, did the dude appear to have a "milk mustache" when he came to grab that hundred.

And usually it should be two managers doing it, and even then the employee needs to stick around as a witness. That movie theater is just messed up.

Right. This is a good lesson - consider the cost to you minimal since it was only a summer job.

Sounds like the theatre has incredibly poor cash controls, and this manager knows that and took advantage at your expense. I would be interested to know if this is the first time such an incident has occured under this managers supervision.

Take this as a lesson for all cashiers responsible for cash. If you are given responisbility for a cash drawer, let NOBODY touch the drawer, I don't care if its the freakin pres. of the U.S. If a manager must take bills out of the drawer, YOU remove the cash and document it and make him sign it. If your ever put in a situation where this is not allowed, or several people have access to the register, flatly refuse the responsability and tell them take this job and shove it.

Welcome to the idiocy of businesses. As long as you're fired anyway go back in and punch the manager in the face for getting you fired. He's probably corrupt and skimming from the tills.

They saw the manager go into your till but they still fired you? He deserves to get his ass beat. Tell him confession is good for the soul.

I don't get all you people that say "that sucks man, I'm sorry for you"

Don't be sorry for him, it doesn't suck - this is a good thing. You don't need that lovely human job.

Now if you were being prosecuted or rather, being expected to pay back that 100 - that would suck.

As it stands, you really need to take a "who gives a fvck" approach to this. Your probably 16, living with mom and this was a SUMMER JOB. Its not like its your career.

You have just learned the biggest rule you need to in life.

LIFE IS NOT FAIR. If you spend too much time trying to ensure fairness you end up an angry bitter person.

Yeah I would call the Labor Commission or something and get this resolved. You said you filed a grievance which is good.

Personally I wouldn't care about the job, but the principal that you're fired for something you didn't do. Stupid pricks :|

Not quite true. The money in his register is his responsibility. He let a manager remove some without giving change or a promisary note. That was bad.

He effectively lost track of the money which is a dismissible offence.

Seems like a dumb business that would want a manager working there who's either a theif, or inept.

Don't worry dude...there's plenty of movie theaters to work at.

Didn't even know they have security cams in theatres to begin w/. And so what if they taped it, security cams are notorious for having poor resolution, and the theatre probably didn't have tape in the machine. For all you know it's just scare tactic to prevent employees from stealing. You got fvcked in the ass.

There isn't too much you can do.
You could try to file a complaint. Its all going to be hearsay BS anyway. That video is long gone my friend. Why do you think they told you to call after they have "watched" it. They meant to say, "Call us after we have reviewed the tape, and erased any information that may damage the managers reputation".

You could try to subpoena for the video for proof, but like I've said.. that video is long gone.. just like the video of Flight 77 into the Pentagon.. *poof*.. gone.. nada.. nil

Movie theater job eh? You must be in HS. From what it sounds like, the bosses are letting you go just because they need a fall-guy. Nothing will hit your record. Just don't put them on your next application or use them as references. None of this stuff matters until you get out in the real world!

By making a big deal of it is how you're going to get something on your "record".

Did he give you a signed receipt precisely documenting the exact amount of money taken from you? No? On what grounds have they fired you then? Someone's word? I have no clue as to how in the US cash movement is regulated but I have a feeling that not everything goes at that place by the book. You don't "just take" money from a cash register. A taxation supervision might be in order.
