Yeah, stuff like this is still around. People still talk bad about a caste that is lower than them. Unfortunately, people I know do this stuff too. In fact, some Indians I know somewhat bash members of lower castes. I am an Indian, myself, btw, from North India, and there the caste system may or may not be as rigid as it is in other parts of India.

India is a vast country in terms of people so it is really accurate to generalize - but when are generalizations good anyway?

I *might* have some feelings/emotions towards a girl who is also Indian, but of a different religion altogether and a different caste. Anyway, if things turn out to be anything between she and I, which has a very low chance to begin with, this may create a problem.

Although, more and more Indians are marrying outside their castes/religions.

slightly OT, I just watched "The Namesake", that was a good movie...
It was about a Bengali family. Although they didn't really talk about the caste system, the parents weren't too happy about the son having a white gf...

I have an Indian friend who really despises other Indian people here in the bay area. He proudly considers himself to be a Brahmin and openly says that the people from other castes wouldn't amount to anything if they had not come here to the US.
I guess people who belong to the superior castes will always consider themselves to be superior.

The poor & the uneducated out here still can't get over the caste system...but I'm shocked to hear educated Indians working in the United States have such beliefs.

also we're all in the same department... IT

Sure, I see that kind of behavior at my company too. There are certain Indians who do not speak to certain Indians (I recently found out it's because of their caste).

You know what? These fvckers are getting a taste of their own medicine, because we treat them like sh!t in return for being contractors on work visas. How do you like them apples?

I work in silicon valley, in the software biz... and yes i can voucher that some of those FOB indians are extremely hard to get along with.(the ones that been here for a while seems pretty cool...) infact i walked out on my last job cuz the new indan manager was a total dick.

My indian gf and I (I am white) get along great and her parents love me. The impressive part is her parents are working class folks and we talk a lot and I have a ton of respect for them. I am so glad I don't have to bother with all this caste bullsh!t. It's so damn silly and ridiculous I just laugh when I hear it. Life is too damn short.
