So I just got Battlefield Vietnam

I was expecting the same fun I got in playing BF1942, but so far I am dissapointed and may go ahead and sell it off in a week if I still feel the same way.

Problems:
1. Does not run anywhere near as smooth as BF1942 online
2. Graphics have very little improvement over BF1942
3. People can kill you from very far away, and you die too quick
4. Much less teamwork than in BF1942, people seem to go and "do there own thing"
5. The game feels like it is circa 2002, not 2004
6. There is little to no use for any unit other than the basic assault unit.

The soundtrack is great and the radio option is cool, but thats all that I found so far. Is there just some big picture I am missing?

Last night I was playing BFV and kept getting killed by enemies way too far away, even when I hid the "foliage" I hear so much about. I kept getting frustrated and went to BF1942 for the remainder of the night.

The game appears to be much more CPU dependant on the server in netplay. In other words, servers just really aren't beefy enough to support player loads over 40....

I think the foliage is a very nice improvement. I'm surprised they managed to implement it with as little performance hit as they did.

This is no different from BF1942.

Yes, because Vietnam was a different war. Infantry operated in small platoons and companies, not in huge corps like they did in World War 2.

Released March 04, so yes, it's basically an '03 game.

I disagree. I can think of ready uses for snipers, Anti-Armor, Anti-Air, and assault units. Engineers and medics certainly do not have the uses they used to, but again, different war.

Here's the thing people don't get about foliage - it doesn't affect visibility at distance. You may notice as you drive through the game that the grass is drawn as you approach it? If you lay down in the grass trying to avoid a helicopter or sniper far away, they will just see you lay down on bare ground. They do not see the grass you see, because they are far away and it is not drawn. This is the same reason you can see THEM way over there.

It's a good game, but yes, it is more frustrating than BF1942 at times - because Vietnam was a very frustrating war. There will be times you are ambushed and dead before you knew who was shooting - just like the actual war. There will be times when you were sniped - like the real war. And there will be times when someone will sneak around behind you and get you from behind.

If you don't like it, sorry, but you have to understand it's a different game, despite the fact that it may resemble BF1942 in green clothing - it's not. You have to think differently and play differently - stay close to strong points, call in that air support, and basically take out Charlie or GI as you see him emerge from the bushes...

Get UT 2004 🙂

I used to play it on a lan at my friends house all the time, so it got played out. Still like quake 3 better.

Ok, this explains a lot. The problem here is that you are clinically insane. Anyone preferring Quack 3 over a UT game is clearly not within their right mind.

You should try out the Desert Combat mod for BF1942.

I tried it. Its fun but I find that on many maps, if one side has a better grasp of the airplanes and scud missles they will dominate the map.

Let me recommend couple of mods to mix things up a bit:

1. WWII mod, official EA release. Revamped Pacific campaign maps from BF1942.
2. Point of Existence. US vs Russia mod. Looks very promising, with many brand new maps and weapons.

Another note about what you said...

If you are looking at someone who is hiding in foliage through the binoculars or sniper scope, they will be hidden because the grass does get drawn in at that point.

I got both UT2k4 and BF:V when they were released and I actually really enjoyed both of them. My main gripe was loading times for maps and how slow they ran (I had a crap Dell at that point, but since have built a much better machine for gaming). Once I built my computer I'm using now I enjoyed both games. I still do. I tend to only play BF:V for lan parties now, because I like playing that game with friends only for some reason, but I play UT2k4 on a regular basis, aside from the 3 weeks I spent engrossed in HL2 and CS:S.

Overall I am happy with my purchase of BF:V. As soon as Battlefield 2 comes out though, the Vietnam will be a thing of the past. 😉
