So I just finished Halo Wars

Let me start off with the package as a whole. The presentation in this game is ABSOLUTELY phenomenal. The CG cutscenes are some of the best I've seen, ever. They're on par, if not better, than Blizzard's cutscenes. The soundtrack is also astounding as well. It's not as epic as Marty O'Donnell's work but rather, it's much more soothing and relaxing (hey, it's an RTS!). I don't know about the story but I liked it overall.

As with the gameplay, it leaves something to be desired. It is fairly simplistic as there is no base building so it lacks some strategy. However, the game is very newb-friendly so it is perfect for beginners. The controls are very well implemented as well (although a KB/M would still be better).

In the end, if you're a Halo fan, you will not be disappointed. On the other hand, if you're an RTS fan, you won't find the depth and strategy you're looking for here. But still, its a very solid game in my opinion.

Note - I have not played multiplayer or co-op

When I first heard they were making a Halo RTS I went ahead and wrote it off as a "would-be flop." I've heard everyone who's played it thus far has rather enjoyed it. Probably won't be a purchase for me but I'd definitely consider renting it.

I feel like it's another Crackdown situation - the game is selling off the Halo name, so it must suck, right? But, like Crackdown, it sounds like this game is actually a good deal of fun. 🙂

hey!!! how come the games i play online, have yet to show up in my service record... 🙂 im like 4 or 5-0. it sux because its only showing 1-0..

regardless the game is cool. im glad i got it 🙂

Well, I beat the game on Normal in about 5 hours, 46 minutes, and 6 seconds.

So, bend that figure whichever way you want.

10 things to do in Halo Wars that I won't be doing for a while apparently...yeah, I'm bitter.

The Must-Do List For Players of ?Halo Wars?
(Real-time Strategy Game for Xbox 360, March 2009)

1. Jack an enemy Wraith tank with a Spartan. This is the absolute best ?money shot? in the entire game.

2. Chew through an entire enemy army with the Arbiter?s Rage power. It?s visceral and evil all rolled up in something never seen in a strategy game before.

3. Get a gold medal on Legendary difficulty on any scenario. This can be incredibly difficult, but it also showcases how many different/evolving strategies you have to employ against a tough opponent.

4. Field a dual Scarab army as any Covenant leader in skirmish. Build some Engineers to heal them up and you might just be able to run the entire map.

5. Play the Deathmatch skirmish mode. It?s a huge adrenaline rush where you focus on what to build since all of the techs are purchased for you.

6. Go to www.halowars.com and browse the plethora of stats about all of your games. This can be an invaluable tool to figure out how to beat those pesky online foes.

7. Play the campaign in co-op with another player over Xbox Live or system link. The campaign really plays differently with two people, plus some of those elusive achievements and medals are easier to get with two folks.

8. Play a few skirmish games on Automatic difficulty. This difficulty level will change as your play gets better (or worse). It starts at 40, which is in the ballpark of Normal difficulty, and can go as high as 200. That?s twice the difficulty of Legendary. How good are you?

9. Grab all the skulls in the campaign. Each campaign mission has an optional objective to kill a certain number of specific units. Complete that objective and the skull will pop in and flare itself on the minimap. Some skulls affect visual things like the ?Wuv Woo? skull that makes Scarabs shoot beams of pure love and rainbows. Other skulls affect gameplay and can even increase your overall score.

10. Visit the Halo Timeline in the main menu. For the true ?Halo? fans, there is a lot of lore to uncover here. Much of it unlocks as you explore and play with various parts of the game.

Yeah, that was the most valid knock on it I read in the reviews. The campaign exists entirely on the UNSC side, no Covenant campaign, which shortens the game considerably.

That's too bad. I don't mind short games, but they need variety.

maybe DLC for the other race?

That's what I'm thinking. After Ensemble Studios was broken up, alot of the employees were formed into a new dev called Robot Entertainment. They're supposed to be working on patches, support, DLC, etc for Halo Wars.

Or The Flood which would have been pretty 😎 IMO; thus it's on my rental list.

Like this game a lot but unit balance is way off - one being the warthog.
(Online)

There are rushes that can be done with all vehicles. What issues are you having with it? Because a cobra can typically take out 4 warthogs alone. I think the balance is great so long as you are ready for rushes. There isn't a rush that can't be thwarted.

warthogs are way to versatile/cheap

RTS's are known for their trends. The key to being able to counter their attack, warthog or not, is to scout them early and know what they are going to do based on what leader they choose, what they are already building, how many reactors they have, etc. If you know that they are building up offenses then you can build up your defenses and work on thinking of a more tactical way to attack them rather than rush.

When I do 3v3 I've got one guy that does a small rush and works on vehicles like grizzlies or gremlins, one guy that does the warthog rush and then upgrades to vehicles on his second wave, and then I normally skip the rush altogether and offer a heal or mac blast here and there since I'm busy teching big to hawks, vultures, or scarab(s).

Scouting is like being able to see into the mind of the guy you are playing rock paper scissors with and giving you a 2\3 chance to be right instead of 1\3.

One last trick: Go to halowars.com when the game is loading up and check the stats on each player. Rush the player with the lowest stats 🙂 Its worked well for us so far 🙂.

Little late in posting 🙂
I tried the single player last night. for the first time. played on legendary.
Halo wars is kinda easy. Im not a big RTS buff. I dont really bother with single player RTS's.
i only made past campaign 3 for now. ill finish it. but im not really expecting much.
the cutscenes are pretty cool though.
