So I just finished a Spartan race today. I got owned.

http://www.spartanrace.com/ (The vid doesn't do justice as to how ridiculous the obstacles get & everyone gets utterly miserable).

Effin' kicked my ass. 3.5 mile course, but it felt like 10 miles because you're always on batsh*t incline/decline and constant obstacles. I finished it in 94 mins~, bit below average, but well ahead of lots of people.

The obstacles at this course were-

*Pull 100lb rock by chain uphill.

*Climb over totally smooth 7, 9, 12 ft wall (the 12' one at half way raped everyone, all exhausted)

*Flip over this dumbass massive truck tire twice UPHILL (almost lost conscious from forcing strength during terrible exhaustion)

*Climb rope and hit the bell, the floor is a trench filled with muddy water upto your waist.

*Bunch of steep mounds and muddy pools up to your chest.

*Carry 50 lb sandbag and walk up this retardedly long & steep rocky hill. Jesus, this was so long and should count as two obstacles. Lots of buff guys gave out + someone feinted. This is where I broke down and had to rest for 3 mins.

*The final torture- crawl under barbed wire up the hill for- 100 yards. This course was just stupid because it didn't actually test your physique, but just pissed everyone off because ground was jagged with rocks and everyone shredded their knees. 100 yards. That's a football field, crawling, uphill, jagged rocks.

*Plenty others...

Fun stuff. I realized it wasn't so much cardio (I run regularly). I have thin thighs and calves (but good upper body str). Constant steep hills just totally put a stop to me. I should actually do a strength conditioning of my lower body.

That actually sounds kind of fun. I despise running, but the obstacles make things interesting. Congratulations on participating. Beats sitting around getting fat :^)

How do you climb a smooth wall? is there a rope?

No rope.

7' = Easy, jump & pull up with your arms from chest.

9' = Uhh.. Run, jump as hard as you can, grab top ledge, then pull up using all your strength.

Maybe it wasn't 12'. That is way too tall. I think it was rather 10'.

10' = Run, jump, try to step up against the totally vertical smooth wall, barely grab ledge with your arms all the way up. Then pull yourself all the up. Lots of people failed. It wouldn't be that bad if you did this only @ full strength, but everyone was just simply batshit exhausted.

I find it hilarious people pay so much to do these stupid races.

What's wrong with that? You ride don't you? You paid for your bike so you could get healthy as well right? As long as someone is motivated, why put them down for paying to do something that is actually healthy for you?

It's $100 and some change, isn't it? ATOT virgins spend more in a night trying to score, taking a fatty out to dinner and the buffet.

Not only that, shit looks fun too

my friend did it this weekend also. He said it was harder than the tough mudder! His knees are all scraped up from the barbed wire and rocks. Sounds fun!

I actually signed up for one of these thinking it would be fun, but my overall fitness level isn't exactly ideal. Reading your post made me want to puke. I only have about a month to get ready.

I used to jog regularly, but I have let go. I tackled this race with zero prep, just winged it.

I almost died, pulled my leg twice (oh the pain), but still finished it.

You can do it.

I suppose you have a point, but somehow I see a difference between pure competition vs an obstacle course assembled by the angry guy who washed out of BUD/s.

Not to mention, the number of fairly serious injuries I see coming back from these events somewhat undermine your "getting healthy" argument. 😀

Better get to work! 😛

We have something along these lines coming to the area in September, and I'm thinking of giving it a go (which will be the first race I have ever entered/paid for - a concept I too sort of find ridiculous but I've just started enjoying strenuous exercise). It's not the Spartan, and there's only one distance (3 miles or so), but similar concept in the end. As long as I have someone to do it with, and keep up with my running plans, it should be fun. 🙂

Now... what to do about socks/running shoes?
I've never enjoyed the feeling of running with soggy socks and shoes. Are there good tricks, or is that basically what it amounts to?

Get into vibrams, but you need to get used to them for a long while before tackling a long race.

You aren't going to the warrior dash in CT are you?

I give the OP credit, but a lot of people that come away with injuries aren't prepared.
People think 3 miles is nothing, but if you don't exercise it's monumental from a dead start.

I run a little, hate it. I only bother with 5k's since I don't care for running. I ride a bike on the road and single track on my MTB but most of my exercise is hiking.
Since I'm doing a warrior dash I'm going more to the gym and doing my upper body. I just want to make a good showing and be prepared enough to not be injured.

there is a livingsocial deal today for Minnesota for something called Camp Titan but you cannot find the site if you google it and it looks like it is run by Christians for the donation to charity. Not that there is anything wrong with that but that means the event will add my name and contact info to some donation calls and also have too much praying. I will continue to pray at church not before i run a race.

I have my GV number for just that reason. Once you see it's a solicitor... BLOCK. 😎

I'm just worried about the cardio. I'm probably one of the most physically strong in my group because I lift and never run (I hate it), but they are all runners who never lift. We shall see...

Now you've got me worried. I signed up for Tough Mudder in October, and then signed up for Spartan Race (August) and Mud Hero (July) so I could get some training in for Tough Mudder and see what I'm getting myself into. The friend who said he'd run Spartan Race with me backed out after I bought my ticket, so I'm running it on my own now.

I hope you are exaggerating a bit. If not, it's just more motivation to train harder I guess! 😀

My buddy finished top 1% in tough mudder ... wish they told you placement like warrior dash.

Warrior dash was fun, tiring because of the ski hill it was on ... the obsticales were a cake walk too... but fun.

i thought that was called "the army"
the OP should just be happy he didn't have to run and push whatever vehicle the drill sergent drove to the obstacle course in back to base after he was done. also, if you weren't told to go for a short swim in full clothes to get you wet and cold before you started, you really didn't run an obstacle course :colbert:

This sounds similar what they have in Ninja Warrior.
