Interesting that you finagled your way back in, but I always dress formal for an interview. There's really no reason not to. The furtherest I've gone is going biz caz to a catering hall interview (after being told to do so by the employer).
Typically I do as well, at least khakis and a golf or collared shirt but in this case I had my IDGAS face on.
I interviewed for a promotion in jeans n t-shirt. Then again, the interviewer was in jeans too. :p
Same, i've actually lost jobs because they complained I was "overdressed" for the position I was interviewing for ironically.
Cleveland...
How did you know where!?!?! You following me?

I've fucked up a couple pretty good before. Once I showed up late, I was actually really close to the job location but completely underestimated lunch time traffic in the area and got stuck in a long line of traffic at a single intersection. Amateur mistake, and I knew I was hosed before I walked in the door and it probably made me even more nervous than usual when I did. After that I always left really damn early and if I'm to early I just sit in my car for awhile.

Another one I borked some technical questions. I didn't know the answer and I kind of lied. I actually thought I knew what something was and spoke generally about it, but upon further research I was wrong. Usually I don't have a problem saying I don't know something but...you know, nerves I guess.

Another one I was interviewed by a company that was owned by some German guy and another Russian guy. Both seemed to just sit there and let me do the talking and I just couldn't read them at all since they were basically not doing anything. I passed their technical test but at the end of the interview he told me I needed to talk more and sell myself better because he wasn't sure he wanted to hire me. I acknowledge I had more to say, but he seriously sat there like a stump and appeared bored. My impression was he wasn't even listening. I'm used to being asked questions and going from there, not giving a detailed presentation from the outset. I just didn't mesh with his interview style I guess.

I hate this game because there's no way to win. The rule of thumb is suppose to be one level up from what the place wears day to day. But its not like most job descriptions include the dress code so unless you do something like call the receptionist to ask the question you're going in blind. And who even knows if that rule applies to the hiring manager. I can tell me current job my boss did not like that I showed up with a tie and blazer much. The place is jeans but I didn't know that, so I went all in.

I once interviewed for an IT job at a lawyers office (thank god I didn't get that) and they were all wearing suits. What is one level up from a suit? A powdered wig?

At the last job interview I went to, they specifically told me that I could wear jeans and tshirt. I opted to dress a little more nicely, and it was pretty obvious to everyone that I was there for an interview.

I got the job... :)

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

"Doing your.… son?"

Actually that was:

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years"

Peter (in his mind): "Don't say doing your wife. Don't say doing your wife Don't say doing your wife Don't say doing your wife Don't say doing your wife"

Long pause...

Peter: "Uhhh... Doing your... son?"

Or at least it was closer to the above. :awe:

The interviews were a success.

No, they weren't. The sole purpose of a job interview from a prospective employee's perspective is to get a job offer. If you didn't get a job offer, the interview wasn't a success.

Unless the company extended an offer or the interview produced good word of mouth that contributed to a job offer somewhere else, it was a failure.

Seeing as how the thread is sliding into job interview anecdotes . . .

My worst interview happened when a stupid recruiter lined me up for a senior managerial opening when I thought I was applying for a lowly technical position.
And, no, i didn't get the job.

I had 2 awesome interviews last year, the rest I bombed.

One, was phone interview. Was in the middle of driving n caught me off guard on technical stuff. After the phone interview and getting home to refresh on my resume, I realized he was asking me technical stuff right off my resume I should have known off top of my head... I bombed that interview, but kinda recovered from the technical questions, "If it's required knowledge for position, I have no problem refreshing myself for it." He called back a week later, forgetting we already spoke. I smashed out every question perfectly. The second time he gave me a higher $$ offer than the first call. Never heard back from them though...

Interviewed with a Xerox owned company. I smashed out first interview beautifully, was perfect, was proud of myself for doing so well. Got scheduled for second interview. Everything was in order for the interview and was going according to plan, until I got on the highway. I was supposed to be at least 20-30min early. I ended up being 20min late because of that traffic jam. The rest of the interview went well, but I knew I didn't have the job before showing up. Coworker from previous job and 2 classmates did get jobs with them though...

Also, because my mom is the crazy cat lady, I can't have a suit. Damn thing would look ugly covered in hair, and would probably turn-off a potential employer seeing me show up in a freshly cleaned, yet dirty suit. So I just show up in nice business formal wear, minus the suit. I always know I'm screwed when other interviewees show up in suits... I should try to figure out type of suit fabrics that wouldn't be a magnet for cat hair/colors that wouldn't make it noticeable.

it's part of preparing for the interview, scope the place out, do some spy surveillance stuff and watch the employees going in and out for an hour. not that i've ever done that..... but i might consider it if they didn't tell me what to wear on the phone .... they always say "business casual" for me

The interviews were a success. That's why I was surprised I didn't get the job. The last time I got fired, the person firing me said he thought I was a good manager. Sometimes there are other reasons for not getting or losing a job other than being good at what you do.

lol...someone is a little aloof of what others think of himself.

Do you honestly think all the people who get fired are for good reasons?

Confirmed.

expectations and hopes should be realized at this point in time.

to say you've "failed" is exactly your lesser self telling you that you fvcken suck.

and if you suck, that's your own damn fault.

I went to one interview in jeans and a t-shirt. The interviewer showed up in a suit, I knew I was in trouble. I passed everything technical ok and seemed to interview quite well but never heard back from them. I called to talk to them after the fact and they said their decision to pass me over was solely based on my appearance. I figured as much, but after being jerked around by them for the prior weeks before the interview I didn't care. I somewhat scoffed at them and informed them that appearances can be quite deceiving. After that phone call, they called me back for another interview and considered me yet again. The interviewer was impressed with my open nature and the fact that I stood up for myself and my appearance, which I based on the "hands on" job I was applying for. He appreciated the fact that I was interviewing for a "hands on" position and dressed ready to demonstrate my skills as opposed to "prettying myself up for an interview". In the long run, we weren't a good fit and I ultimately turned them down. I did learn a lot about interviewing and myself during that process though.

Extracting bull semen IS a hands on job! :p
