I first heard them after Auto Rock got stuck in my head after watching Miami Vice (the Jamie Foxx-Colin Farrel movie). Best damn thing about that movie - one of those movies that fail to evoke any kind of response from the viewer - positive, negative, love, hate, anger, frustration, interest, boredom etc. The movie plays and you just sit there like an inanimate object. Oddly, you walk out the theater and you have this strange tune stuck in your head.

Mogwai are good but I prefer others in their genre more.

Such as?

This is kind of a broad brush to paint them with but most people would classify them as being in the post-rock genre.

Here are a few others to check out in that genre

Instrumental:
Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Explosions in the Sky
This Will Destroy You
If These Trees Could Talk
Red Sparowes
Tortoise

Heavier w/ vocals:
ISIS

Inspired by:
My Bloody Valentine

I would say there are definitely some shoegazer style elements lifted from the MBV book of how to create sonic walls of guitar anarchy. If you end up liking MBV check out 'Amusement Parks On Fire' and the heavier yet 'The Angelic Process'

According to their Myspace page they are "Rock / Psychedelic / Metal", so, um, there you go?
