I'd retest.

I'd also cut out all saturated fats (all, not just fast food) now and start a regular exercise program. Exercise can have a dramatic effect in those with the genetic predisposition for high cholesterol and heart disease.

Lots of fish would be my suggestion along with weight training and cardio.

Dead man walking!

Tell her so that she can help you get it down and keep it down. You should never be eating fast food and should keep your sodium down to an absolute minimum. This isn't an urgent situation, its an extremely urgent situation.

he dint make any dietary or exercise recommendaations. most of the family on my dads side have died from heart disease/diabetes(sp).

my diet is not too bad, mostly red meats or chicken. very random fast food, like once every two weeks. the occasional salad or pasta

Well I can understand not wanting to tell her since you don't want to concern her, but if she finds out later on that you withheld that from her shes going to be pretty pissed IMO.

hardly shens, why would i make something like this up? the first test was six weeks ago. it was 579. i took another test and will have the results tommorrow after six weeks of low dosage crestor. it scares me it was that high and i had no idea.

sorry if that didnt make sense in the first post. still in six weeks it prob would have not dropped that much

Have you considered a vegetarian diet? Or like 80% veggie?

Also, what was your HDL count? If you can get that boosted over 60 it actually becomes protective and drops you down one risk factor that predict the possibility of a heart attack.

she know it was high as i had to start taking medicine, my biggest concern is telling her how high and scaring her. i dont want to cause undue stress or worry to anyone.

How old were they? And have you been tested for diabetes recently?

i hadnt, as i dont love veggies but know i have to eat them to stay healthy, but i'm beginning to rethink that stand

they were mostly in their mid to late forties, i dont have diabetes and i cant recall at the moment what my hdl level was but i think it was around 60-65

Personally, I'd ride the high cholesterol to an early grave before going strictly vegetarian.

life insurance?

He's gonna have trouble getting a decent policy with a cholesterol level that high.

My $0.02:
- Tell your wife.
- Change your diet. No more fast food or soda drinks. Eat oatmeal for breakfast every morning, and green veggies at every lunch and dinner.
- Exercise for at least 1 hour 3 times a week.

You're crazy if you don't tell your wife. What, to spare her a little worry? That's part of her "job" as your spouse, to worry about you. Secrets like that you cannot keep from her!

well guys and girls, i took your advice and told her on thursday afternoon. her response was, "have you seen my tennis shoes?". i guess that maintains the status quo of my my life, and she does sometimes wonder why i spend so much time online

on a more positive note, i got the results from my latest blood work yesterday afternoon. my cholesterol has dropped from 579 to 271 in six weeks of medication. all with no affect on my liver as is so common with cholesterol medicine. still not great but getting there. my medication dosage is going to be doubled for the next three months to see if we can controll it down to the normal range. i will be taking medicine for the rest of my life apparently but thats fine,, as long as i can make it the next 18 years so i can see my kids become adults, anything is fine

thanks for the support and the kind words all, means alot to me.

Since all the good advice was given... I'll give some bad advice.

Take the money from your savings account and go to Vegas. You're gonna die in a year... enjoy it.

glad to hear it, good luck with the further lowering!

i'm less than an inch shorter than you and weigh a good 30lbs less. Maybe you should exercise more.
