So I just bought a TV Tuner...

I made a trip to Bestbuy today, since I am off from work today and I was bored, and I just wanted to look around and maybe buy something cool. I looked around on what to buy...hmmmm maybe a new mouse, keyboard?, cd-rs?, hdd? then my eye caught a TV tuner. It is an Ati TV Wonder VE and it was $50 w/ a $10 MIR. At first I was like *doh*, since I heard that Ati tv tuners are terrible, but then I thought, what the hell, if it doesn't work I'll just take it back.

Well I got home and threw it into my comp and downloaded the latest drivers and software from ati.com. Once I booted up the software, I was in for a pleasant surprize. The quality was much better than what I expected and the program seemed bug free. Now I can watch cable news on my comp without getting up and moving to the other room 🙂

My Radeon All-in-Wonder 8500DV p0wnes j00000!!!!!!!!!1 😛 It's my primary television 😉

Dunno, I just got rid of my Pinnacle TV tuner b/c I never used it. I believe that life is better without TV.

I've got the same card in my spare system at the office so I can watch TV while I work. It's a great little card for the price. The picture quality is much better than the Pinnacle USB tuner I had and the software is rock solid.

My 32" Toshiba TV with components inputs hooked upto digital cables owns your 8500DV! 😛

(Yes, yes, I know.... one of you has a 60" Plasma that does HDTV or something.... brag away! 🙂)

TV tuner n00b question: Is there a way to get TV on your comuter over the airwaves, or do they all require cable?

i would think you'd still need an aerial or bunny ears for reception.

I've tried it, and it sucked. Reception was not good enough.

Mine's not my primary yet... When I move it will go into my HTPC rig that I'll be building. Right now it is in my primary pc with a cable going to the TV for TIVO functions.

you should download and use
Dscaler

for your software driver..it produces a better image than the ATI software (i have the same tv card)

also, there is a nifty program called
VeedubP4
which is a great video recording program

these programs are superior to the ATI software, and fully compatible with your card...

You had a bad antenna, bad cable or are in a bad reception area.

I have a cheezy Radio Shack double bow-tie resting on top of a gate off the back porch of my townhome here. I pick up most of the digital stations (I can get them all with about 10' more height but I need a permanent solution for that).

Powerstrip is a great utility for resolution/timing settings to get the best out of your display (esp. when your display is a 55" HDTV 🙂 ). PCs are great DVD players.

Ok, I'm an idiot. How do you get TV to start with DScaler?

EDIT: I have an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon. Everything works perfectly with ATI's software, except that the software crashes every few seconds. With DScaler, I can get the newest (alpha) program running, but there's no option to watch TV. In the second-most-recent program, I'm getting the error "No Suitable Hardware". Help!?

Oh wow! The picture is much better with DScaler, however, the UI isn't up to par with ATi's.

Does anybody make a component TV tuner that has HDTV that will drive a flat panel monitor without a computer?? I have a spare flat panel I'd like to use as a TV but don't want to dedicate a computer to it.................?
