A stack of checks, a Visa credit card and a Visa check card are in the mail. $300 sitting in savings, $200 in checking. They also gave me a snazzy membership ID card with my member number and photo. It's MUCH better than my driver's license photo, and it was taken with a $50 P&S digital camera from Walmart, while the DL photo was taken with a $5000 piece of specialized DMV photo equipment. That is all.

Because I recognized the camera they were using here as a POS sold at the Best Buy across the street, and because the DMV is state-run and it was some ridiculous piece of hardware that looked nothing like a camera. Therefore, it cost $5000.

What are the requirements for joining a credit union? Someone told me something long time ago about having to meet certain criteria such as being a member of a non-profit organization or knowing someone who already had membership. So I never bothered trying to join a CU. I'm curious though. How could one qualify for a membership?

I'm a member of the Cincinnati Federal Employee Credit Union. My father works for the Dept. of Treasury (federal employee) so I get access because of him. Amazing rates and they approved me (at age 20) for a 5.7% car loan on an 7 year old used car last year.

When I was a collector at Citibank, they allowed all members (like 2000+ in my building alone) access to a credit union.

All teachers in the state of Kentucky here have access to an educators' credit union.

Seems that most of them are work-oriented.

BTW, how have you been DearQT? Long time no talk.

Oh, and I should note that I stole a REALLY cool pen from there by mistake. Now I see why everyone has drawers full of pens from banks and stuff, they're so f'ing easy to walk off with by accident.

Yep, I opened up a CU account last year, nice benefits and fall-back procedures like anti-check bouncing and stuff. The photo was also marginally better than my DL photo.

My bank has tons of cheapo plastic pens for the taking. They have their logo on them so instant cheap and subliminal advertisting for them!

Credit unions are a pain in the ass, they usually don't have a lot of branches which means less ATM locations and nothing is free(except for the pens ;) ) yet they don't give you anything in return.

and why would you have any money in their savings account? Are they giving you more than 2.6%?

Does the credit union charge you for using ATMs outside of their network? If they dont then where ever there is a WaMu you get withdrawals for free.
