But now I can't run 3dMark 2001. 🙁 It keeps telling me that I need to have atleast DirectX 8.1. Can I reinstall DX 8.1 without having to reinstall XP?
 
all you have to do is do a registry search and change dirX version text from 0901 to 0881 to fool it

theres also a guy that posted a DirX 9 uninstall script - got it here somewhere

some people report +300 in 3DMark, some report a 50 pt drop
but it doesn't hurt anything YMMV

 
well, i'm posting on a 98 machine, so here its in - hkeylocalmachine/software/microsoft/directx

in XP you type in regedit32 and type in RC (release candidate) in "find"
and keep hitting F3 until you see it. that would be my first try at finding it. vers might do it.

 
I couldn't find it by searching, but I dug around and I think I found it. This is the version: 4.09.00.0901

What should I change to fool 3dMark into working? I tried changing 0901 to 0881 but it still told me that I need DX 8.1. 🙁
 
I wont really be able to answer until I get near my XP machine.

you could try a dirX reboot/reboot

go to DirX in explorer C:\program files/directX/setup/display
disable D3D, reboot, enable D3D reboot
this allows a redetect of D3D capabilities

whats your O/S anyway?

here's

a predone detection fooler. you need to save the code to a file and use winrar to unzip it. Double clicking any .reg file auto dumps it into registry.

I also found the DirX9 uninstaller, but I'm too lazy to explain it.

Edit: I see what you did - you need to change the first 9 to 8 also.

with XP you can set a restore point (programs/accessories/system tools/system restore) before the install..and later restore the system if you want the old one back.
Worked for me.

I didnt see any advantage or performance gain using dx9 beta - no more fps in Morrowind etc. as some people claimed.

So i restored my sys again because i dont like all the beta files on my PC...and afaik dx9 also expires some day in august.

I dont know how to 'uninstall' on 98....i think to ask that question afterwards (after the install) is a little bit...ehrm...odd 🙂
