My PR prof mentioned that Chrysler was going to lose over a Billion dollars this quarter alone and that Ford was thinking of merging with them (or was it merge with GM).

Can someone fill me in?

Thx.

Cliffs:

The American Auto industry is going through the same genesis the British one did in the late 1970's.

GM-Ford wont merge, nor buy stocks in each other

they will probably agree to cooperate together more, design more things together (engines/transmissions) thats all they will do.

Chrysler, well... who knows.

Interesting. Deja vu all over again! Ford and Chrysler actually held merger talks back in the early 80's, when Chrysler was on the verge of bankruptcy back then. However, the feds bailed them out that time.

Thanks.

I've actually been surprised that Chrysler's "turnaround" has lasted this long. I'm not overly impressed with their offerings. Lets see...

Chrysler 300 - Not bad...has lost it's newness appeal. Still one of there better cars.
Chrysler Crossfire - Dud
Chrysler Town & Country - Old...losing sales big time
Chrysler Sebring - New model coming out that is uglier than the old...I predict poor sales

Dodge Ram - Not nearly as nice as the new GM pickups or the Ford F150..also has the Nissan Titan and new Tundra to compete with...it would be the last full size truck on my list
Dodge Dakota - Nissan and Toyota have better offerings...and buyers in this segment like the imports
Dodge Stratus - Is this thing still made? Are they going to call it the Avenger now...
Dodge Charger - Sure the Hemi is nice...but a 4 door? I don't see this making them much money for long...they need to come out with the Challenger...but I have my doubts that it will really generate that much sales either.
Dodge Caliber - Really? It might be generating some sales now...but I rank it only slightly better than a Pontiac Aztek
Dodge Neon - It's on its way out and never was as nice as most of the other cars in this segment...sure the SRT-4 was fast...but it still looked like ass
Dodge Durango - Ugly, FATASS looking vehicle. If I want something that ugly I'll just buy a minivan.
Dodge Nitro - same as above...except replace minivan with Tahoe or Yukon...
Dodge Caravan - Old, much better alternatives out there. Hell, I'd buy a Kia Sedona over this thing.

Jeep Wrangler - I'll admit...this is a quality product...but it isn't going to save the company
Jeep Cherokee - OK...another awesome vehicle...give credit where credit is due
Jeep Commander - Why buy this over the Cherokee...for unusable 3 row seating? I guess just not my thing
Jeep Liberty - Ugly, girlly jeep
Jeep - Compass/Patriot - Isn't this Jeep...who the hell thinks it is a good idea to sell these as Jeeps??? Hmmm...lets ruin the Jeep name as quickly as we can to make a few $...

I just don't see there future prospect being all that great. I really feel like GM and Ford are providing a much better mix of vehicles...and even they are still having a hard time.

I own one of the older model Sebrings, and I couldn't agree more with you.
But I've seen a shocking number of Calibers around here already, in all parts of town.
And you left out the Chrysler Pacifica.

DCX's midsize car line has always been a sore point. C'mon, the Stratus and Sebring? I've had Sebring rentals and they truely are awful vehicles.

Who else here would buy a Kia over a "Big 3" American car? But yeah, There are about 1,000 Calibers and 300Ms all around here hardly ever see any other Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep around here. You need to do a little research into Mercedes. They also have ties with Mitsubishi who nearly went under. Wonder what their business plan is.

I left out the Pacifica for a reason...as should everyone else from their buying lists! ;) :)

I agree if your talking about gas burners, but in the HD segement Dodge rules. The models with the Cummins Turbo desiel are the best HD trucks available, they easily spank the Powerstroke and Duramax models from Ford and GM.

The first gen "Cloud Cars" (Stratus, Cirrus, Breeze) weren't too bad. The second gen was kind of an afterthought. With gas prices, I think DCX is putting more thought into its cars. The new "Avenger" and sebring looks good. (At least to me)

The convertible I can understand, that's a segment that doesn't have a whole lot of choices, but I'm referring the sedans and coupes.

It was band that started off with Peter Gabriel and then Phil Collins took over right?

Yeah, I've got the sedan. After two years and 35,000 miles (58k total), I really don't see what could be "awful" about it. Enough power, interior, trunk, quiet/smooth ride, and decent mpg. Sure, resale sucks, but I bought it used to begin with ;)

The coupes were just an Eclipse, at first DCX didn't even hide it as the first coupes had pretty much the same interior. They changed it after that.

Unless you have an auto transmission. :)
