I think this has potential because of the catchy and somewhat easy to remember domain details.at

However GOOD LUCK competing with Craigslist, local UseNet Groups, eBay and newspaper classifieds.

I don't think the OP is competing with newspaper classifieds--he/she is supplementing newspaper ads.

Does Craigslist have pics?

My question to the OP is: How will you advertise your service?

Yes I believe you can list up to 4 pics and they even host it for you!

Development is going well, i just haven't had the time to do what I want to do. For the auctions component, im going to buy the software and integrate it. I get the source code, so I can mess with it and tweak it to my existing platform. I'm going to use the same software that bidville.com uses.. I already pretty much finished the classifieds part, minus a few details....

Maybe I didn't understand your original premise...your site is to be used by sellers to easily add pictures to a classified ad, right? What is the auction for?

the site will have its own internal classifieds and auctions system. users get a homepage like, details.at/techboyjk which will contain a short member profile and a list of the member's listings..... If the member wants to, he can choose to use the url details.at/member to point to another site instead of their details.at homepage.....

i have various other domains as well that the members can use, so that they can create other custom url's... like nowhiring.at/anandtech etc.

nice!

thats the goal. myspace just got bought for $550million (well the entire company did, not just the site) and eBay just bankrolled craigslist. Being that I have helping to break the record on eBay for the largest auction they have ever had, and I helped with the migration of Pakistan's stock exchange, and all their other critical government and business websites over to the US, I hope somebody will help me fund this so I can get something going. I already got the company setup legally, Details.at Trading Company, Inc. (illinois) and I have an office for it setup in a non profit technology incubator. I've spent all my cash and earnings getting it to this point, now i just need someone to fund the launch of it. I'm going to use the software that bidville.com uses for auctions, and I already have the member component and the classifieds components about 90% finished. You can already register, sign in, manage url redirection, place classifieds, etc.. I'm just working on the little details of it.

More than getting the cash reward of something like this, I'd much rather see it fly and watch it be a success, from a usage perspective.

use subdoamins isntead of folders. so it would be myfreesite.details.at instead of details.at/mefreesite

thanks for the advice but, the whole point is that it uses the phrase "details at destination" if you say it destination details at....... , it sounds like an incomplete statement..... destination details at where? how about just details.at/destination

Details@username. i may very well give users both options though. I haven't worked anything out to dynamically create the subdomain, but I have for the other way.....

I'mt using folders, I wrote a script so that when a page is requested and if the destination doesn't exist, such as details.at/techboyjk, it strips everything away around the "possible" member name and then looks it up in a database. the destination doesn't exist, but the username does, it will look it up and forward to either their homepage or to a different address they have selected. if no account exists, then it all falls through and gives the default, page not availabe error.....

For a while my pride and joy of a business accomplishment in the corporate world was helping break the record on eBay for the largest $$ auction($4.9M). We sold a fleet of planes, including a plane of JFK Jr's and a plane of John Travolta's. I worked with Michael Barnes, the guy who represented the people who caught the recent record breaking home run balls (Mcgwire, Sosa, Bonds). He is also Todd McFarland of Spawn's agent, and represents Emmitt Smith the football player as well. I'm really lucky to have crossed paths with him. He gave me some opportunities to really pad my resume. Regarding the auction, I did alot of the work for the eBay webpage that the auction was on, worked with the photos, content, etc. that Mike gave me. I also made the full page advertisement that was ran in various Aircraft magazines(like plane and pilot). I helped, I didn't produce it.

Ebay Press Release

If you'll notice, it says Michael Barnes and Company from St. Louis. I live in Columbia, IL which is 10 minutes from St. Louis....

not bragging, just hoping the experience will lend credibility to the project at hand...

What costs have you incurred to this point beside your personal time to develop the site, domain registration fees, and hosting fees?

What type of 'launch' did you anticipate? Don't you think that a grass-roots word-of-mouth promotion could do well for you? Start by putting the URL in your sigs. You already have scores of people reading this thread. Momentum will build in time.

just launch it already.

almost there. the code is almost done, but my hang up is that I designed it on top of Access, and I need to port the db structure to ms sql.

yea. my tables are basic and straightforward. As soon as the entire thing is done, I'm going to migrate everything to SQL. It shouldnt be that hard. I expect some hang ups, but my tables are simple.

I needed to sell something and since your site wasn't quite ready to go I used a similiar site. When I tried to put the URL in a newspaper ad the newspaper representative told me that they would not allow the URL because it competes with them. I was so f'n pissed off! I paid for the ad on the website and they won't let me use it!

So much for free speech.

Woah, stop, right now.

Problem 1:
Details.at/myfreesite
come.to
jump.to
whackoff.to

Typically this is where your majorly shady internet scum hang out. If you posted an ad with a url like that I would probably consider it some sort of scam.
This is exactly what I thought.

Sounds like a good idea. It will be rough competing with larger established businesses. But, I wish you the best of luck. And...if I need a service like that, I'll look to yours first.
