the problem is, im very unfit. im 33 and i havent exercised(martial arts/weights)and eaten good food for years. i also drink & smoke :(

luckily my friend is gonna run with me to give me some added motivation and confidence

i think i read somewhere running early in the morning or late at night was the best time, as there would be less pollution

personally, i dont think i could run more than a 100 yards without stopping/collapsing

any tips

thanks

You might want to start with cycling first. It'll give you a chance to build a decent cardio base and start to work the leg muscles without putting your joints through the punishment associated with running. Once you're feeling more confident, add a day or two of running to your routine.

And cut out the drinking and smoking of course. If you really want to get healthy it takes more than just a running routine, it take a complete lifestyle change.

Had my first run tonight, it was five minutes walking, then two minutes running, that being done four times total. I sure did feel the heat afterwards on the surface of my skin. I noticed a dull, sore pain on my right kneecap from the very start, but I'm not sure I should worry about it yet.

We were advised to avoid cotton socks, which is pretty much all I own. What material makes good socks for runners?

Personally I get very hot when I run so I would say for me it feels about 30 degrees warmer. So if it is a little chilly when you step outside, you will regret wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants once you get started. Sometimes at the end of a long hard run when it is only 40 degrees out, I will be in shorts with no shirt and people are looking at me like  but to me it feels warm out. So before you go out running, check the temperature and add about 20 degrees and dress as if thats the weather you were running in.

I do this too. I underdress because I know that after I start running I will be at a comfortable temperature. Only problem is, one time when I was 3 miles out, I twisted my ankle and had to walk back home. I was frozen by the time I made it back.

Meh, I train with cotton socks and NEVER had an issue...and in college we put in 100+ miles a week. I guess YMMV on that though, but I never had any "sock" issues. As far as your knee goes, you should ice it at the end of your run for about 20 minutes. Ice can do wonders for sore spots on bones/joints.

Is there anything I can do to remedy this issue?

Change your breathing pattern to alternate feet. 3 steps breath in, 2 steps breath out. That way you don't end on the same breath on the same foot. I can't tell a noticeable difference myself but thats what i hear from running people.

LOL PWNED! :p One time a couple winters ago we had a HUGE snowstorm the night before our 6:00AM run, and even on the run it was snowing quite a bit. Anyway, a couple freshmen who didnt know the city very well decided to go out on their own route and guess what? They got lost. 3 hours later our team/coaches are calling the police department and park rangers to help find them. For all we knew, they were freezing to death somewhere. Just as the team was splitting up into teams to drive around the city looking for them, they pull up in a cab. ;)
