This is for my first real job after college and I've never had a phone interview

I'm pretty comfortable with regular interviews and I'm excited about the possibility of working with this company.

I was just wondering if there was anything specific I should be prepared for and also if there are any funny anecdotes anyone wants to share.

Thanks!

When I phone screen someone, I'm generally just looking for the ability to communicate. So try to avoid "umm", "uh", "hmmm", and the like. For me with a phone screen, how you say it is as important as what you say.

Companies love it when you know information about them. Look up their website and their competitors while you're on the interview. Hearing the typing of the keyboard and the clicking of the mouse lets them know you're interested in their company

I get the urge to pace around but it's better if you sit. I've also read that it's a good idea to dress up. It sounds stupid but it actually helps. I made a list of all the potential questions they could possibly ask so I had some notes and I was able to answer them quickly. This helped me to avoid the uhhs and umms :)

Find a quiet place to have the interview (not on your cell phone at a Starbucks). Don't eat or drink while on the phone. If possible, do it from a land line because a cell signal going in and out is very distracting.

Thanks for all the great tips. I think it went pretty well.

dabuddha - I actually considered dressing up for it even though I was just at home but instead spent that time preparing potential questions which ended up helping me out.

I'm hoping I hear something from them soon.

Heh, On my phone interviews I always prowl around the house, dressed like a bum and staying far away from my computer.

Doing the research beforehand is key though.

Remember when they ask about weaknesses say "I have no weaknesses, I only have strengths" make them understand how valuable you are to them.

Have a bunch of questions about things written down and ready to be asked. Never do an interview without some good questions. They can be anywhere from "what would a typical day be like" to "why the heck did you chose me"

Always answer the phone with, "Yo, Homie. 'Sup!" Interviewers eat that stuff up...trust me...;)

OP, glad you're comfortable with how the interview went. What's the job? You know we gotta have specifics...

This is terrible advice. If they ask for your weaknesses, just say kryptonite.

You can be naked, they have to wear clothes. Use this knowledge to your advantage.
