So i bought tickets for a Sigur Ros show that is on Feb 20th...over 5 months ago. They HARDLY tour in the US, and I know this is my one and only chance to see them live. I bought these tickets for me and a friend before I even knew what my classes for this semester would be.

So I go to my Math 125 class today and the teacher comes off as a real hard ass from the get-go. He shows us the sylabus and sure enough...the first test is on Monday, Feb 20th. 🙁

I am gonna try and draft up an email explaining my situation, but Im not sure if he is gonna let it fly. The makeup exam is on thr Thursday after that exam at 6:45 am!!...but that is far better than missing what could be the best show of my life! He mentioned verious excuses he has heard...but neglected to mention anything like this.

Im not sure how to word the email other than just explaining the situation and hopes he understands....any other ideas?

edit: the test is at 7PM the show is at 8PM....2 hours away

1/19 Update: I Emailed him saying that I had to go out of town on that day, and that it had been planned for quite some time and he responded "in your email you mentioned nothing that would excuse you from the test....at this point I will still expect you to be there".......*sigh* now i gotta figure something out to say i am going out of town for.....🙁🙁

any ideas?

1/20 update: well I decided to drop....i know what you're thinking...WTF....but it wont matter. I have to take this class, along with several other before i get to my junior year. I simply substituted one of the other required classes (speech comp) for this....and Ill take this math course next semester...

yeah, I was gonna try and mention in the email (or as someone suggested, going in person) that I will take it whenever convienient to him....

Sigur Ros, 8PM in Indianapolis....im making a 2 hour drive with a friend of mine to go see them
 
Good luck on trying to skip out on a test because of a concert. Even if you ask to take it early, it's an inconvenience for him and I doubt he'll go out of his way to let you go watch some people play music.

he is going to be going out of his way anyway....this is a 750 person class...there is going to be at least ONE other person who cannot make it for whatever reason...

Death in the family. Cut out a random obituary or have a friend drop by a funeral and pick up one of those little cards and mail it to you. 🙂
 
just say a family vacation was planned.. tell your parents the plan, and have him call your parents and hopefully your parents help 🙂
or tell him the truth. without knowing the guy, sometimes the truth, and not a bullshit exuse/reason, might work on him

and a 750 person class?! what class? and what school?!!!

its math 125...a business requirement, there is 3 classes of 250 students...but he treats it as one big class, we all take tests together and what not. im at UIUC
 
Your best bet is to make up some other excuse that would be more valid than a concert.

Is it ethical? No. But like you said, one and only chance.

I don't think you should lie. Caught in a lie has an almost 100% certainty of getting a big fat zero.
 
Also, assuming you made out your class schedule, is it the norm to have tests at times other then when you scheduled your class? I've never encountered that, (at 5 different universities) other than for final exams. Explain that when you made out your schedule, you didn't think there would be a conflict with class responsibilities.
 
You do not need to explain why you cannot come to the test. You have rights, and you do not have to explain yourself even to your employer as long as you give notification.

Taking the test late will not be an option. Only way you are going to pull it off is to write early.
