ill say it one last time. id still get a better cooler. you can knock 10c+ off those temps easy with an ultra 120xtreme.

you could quite easily do 3.5 to 3.6ghz with great temps with a good q6600 chip that doesnt need crazy volts to do it. yours seems like it could be one of those.

well ok thats like another 60 bucks
and then a 15 dollar fan cuz it doesnt come with one.
85 with tax n ship to get another 3-400 mhz safely...worth it or not?

to me yes. oc'ing is worth it.

performance wise 3-400mhz is not needed in reality for gaming or anything.

however, i dont want my idle temps above 39c anyways so i would do it for that just to get to 3.2 on your specs.

i idle at 35 with my current setup and i like it.

well it doesnt help that every canadian place has it on back order.
btw i let it idle a bit more..its at 24-26 on speed fan
40 or so in TAT.
what exactly is the threshold of an ideal idle temp? thanks

idling at 45 is well within thermal specs for this chip.

i mean considering that people will use quad core rigs as 24/7 crunching rigs like for folding or what not, and those are gonna run at load all the time and high, 45 is nothing i guess.

it may be just my personal thing but for my quad i dont want it idling over 39. hitting close to 50 would just be high to me.

but like i said, people with money build these rigs just to crunch at load 24/7 and they run for years.

most people dont talk about idle temps when they talk this talk so im not really sure what high idles can do to a chip. usually the discussions i see on this center around load temps.

yea thats exactly my sentiments
and after checking tons of others, i think 60-65 is well within the norm of load temps.

my big question now is the following:
9x365 (3285mhz) with a 730mhz ram or
8x400 (3200mhz) with a 800mhz ram

strictly speaking, which performs better overall?

alternatively, i can set the spd to 2.4, but ustated earlier that this might have some sort of unforseen effects? if so explain. otherwise im pretty sure my ram can do an 840mhz

8x400. But that G0 can do 3.3-3.4 easy... Try some more voltage or something.

If you can keep the same timings at DDR2-800 I'd say that would be faster. Usually from my testing in my own systems having faster memory and a higher fsb provides better overall performance. Losing 85Mhz on the CPU is very minor.

You should be able to put it on 425Mhz FSB and up the voltage on the cpu and run an 8x multi for 3.4Ghz. Memory at 1:1 would be fine, no need for going overboard there.

ok so i tested orthos for a while np
right now i just started testing the following:
412x8 = 3300, with 824 on the ram
1.3875 on vcore
i'll post a screenie after some time

o and idiotK, i toned down the ddr2 to +2v as per what you said. and im happy i did :)
as for the idles, personally i think im alright with a 45-48 idle, especially since on TAT i get 63ish on full load.
i read that 96 is the throttle, and of course you dont wanna be anywhere near that.

there we go

o btw this probably means nothing, but when i was installing the arctic frezer 7 i accidentally touched one quadrant of the paste with my thumb, and it left a pretty noticeable dent in the paste.
that wouldnt matter right? once it got pressed onto the cpu it probably squished anyway (i hope)

You should have no problem upping the ram, I have the same ram and it overclocks great even with lowered timmings. Mine tops at DDR2-950 (475mhz), even loosening the timings and increasing the volts don't get it to DDR2-1000, but I have been running it 24/7 for months at DDR2-950 4-4-4-12 with 2.1v
