Okay.. I admit it.. I used a damn keygen last time I installed on my desktop. Why? Because I graduated college and the copy I got from our server was some sort of academic version that emailed me my product key. Then my hard drive crashed.. and I no longer have access to my old UF email. Besides, I didn't wanna talk to some guy in India. So.. I 'have' a license, but I cannot get the product key - it is long gone.
Then, I have a license on my Toshiba 3000-S304 laptop. It says 'Windows XP Pro' on one of those holographic stickers.. Thing is, I've been running Ubuntu and then OpenSuse 10.2 for a few years now.. XP is NOT on that system anywhere.
So.. shouldn't I be able to transfer the license to my desktop? It badly needs security patches which my 'invalid' copy no longer allow me to get.
But, XP won't take my product key that's printed right on my laptop.
Can I call Microsoft and get it transferred?
