So I had to buy a new mattress yesterdsay.

I need a new mattress also, what of these online foam/latex do you guys recommend, so many, casper, nector, purple, anything off amazon. etc.. For small full size.. they are fairy cheap now

We might go with a overpriced retail Simmons Beautyrest (wife wants one since she loved the bed at one of the hotels we stayed in over our last road trip), or, we may go with Bed in a box, nectar, ghostbed, or Saatva ....

If you're skinny/light, you'd probably be perfectly fine with spending 1/2 to 1/3 as much at Ikea. (fat people need thicker and heavier beds)
 
Lots of people saying it's worth it to put in big money to get a good bed.

I've also heard it's successful marketing that makes you guys think like that. Seen plenty advocate for getting a standard sealy from Costco and AVOID those overpriced mattress chains.

Not sure which to believe at this point - to be honest.

I've woken up with backpain every day and been literally afraid to go to sleep. So yeah, a decent bed matters.

Is a $5k worth it over a $1k or even a $500 bed? Probably not. But is a $500 worth it over some beat-to-hell saggy bullshit? Yes.

Yeah I guess I can generally agree with what you're saying. But in places like mattress firm isnt the majority of shit in there $1500+ ultra memory foam topped inclining electric beds with super duper cool stuff?

Best tip I've had in life is just buy a decent Sealy from Costco - to which I have to agree, I have yet to get a shitty product when I buy from costco... and if I did, they would take it back no questions asked.
 
my last mattress cost me 600 bucks, but its a really nice memory foam and its gone 12 years so far, with absolutely no issues.
I suspect it could survive another 12 easily.
 
I heard someone once say that they try to spend their money where they spend their time. Things that get a lot of use they put the money/research into getting right and don't cut corners. His sleeping arrangements were at the very top of the list given it's a third of your life.

Similarly my desk chair, my monitor/input devices, etc get priority.

I spent $1000 or so from one of the early online memory foam mattress companies. It's been six years I'm starting to think about replacing it, $170 a year or whatever that works out to seems really cheap to me for 3000 hours of use.

I did end up with one of those $2k mattresses, but I could afford it and I really liked it. (I think it matters more for us big boned sorts of folks.) My housemate has a $600 mattress and likes it fine. I would generally agree with you about Costco.

But I put it on a $130 wooden bed frame I got on Amazon, because those inclining beds are bullshit.
 
All my adult life I’ve lived with the belief that there are two things you should NEVER cheap out on...your bed and your work shoes/boots. You spend too much time in one...and not nearly enough time in the other.

Well it doesn't help that the standard mattresses stores are MASSIVELY marked up. If you're not getting half off you're getting ripped off. It makes it really hard to separate quality from cost. More expensive != better, especially when comparing non-traditional options like internet only stores. I'd say more than money it pays to do your diligence in terms of reading reviews and planning on spending enough time laying down in a store if possible.

I'll go out on a limb and guess no one (who's lived with one) recommends foam mattresses. Unless you're camping, or have an RV.

Are you kidding? Latex and memory foam tend to be better than coil spring by most accounts. They aren't talking about Urethane foam camping pads.
 
I been using 2 since the hot deals posted here since 2001.. each one was 10 years and needs to be replace (should be) kids puke on them from flu. Thats why I'm looking for new one, and it looks like technology has improved quite a bit. They are great..

Do you live in a really small place? What adult doesn't sleep in at least a full-sized bed? It's the same length as a twin but about 15" wider.
 
I'm three years into my Purple mattress and really like it. The coolest bed I've slept in. Took several months to get used to it/let it break in a bit but once it did it's been great. Looking at getting another to replace a guest bedroom in need of an update.

I've been looking at those. I'm mostly worried that going from a traditional padded spring mattress would be hard to get used to. What do you have it sitting on? A platform, box spring, or ...?
 
I've got it just on the old box spring bases from my previous mattress. The hardest part to get used to is if you used to have a very plush pillow top and go to a Purple. It's completely different and you'll probably hate it at first. Initially it is pretty firm (as someone who prefers softer beds) but then it softens up a bit after a few months. If you've got a firmer bed now it shouldn't be a big change. It may actually feel a bit softer due to how the purple material compresses vs traditional coils.

I've never heard of Purple. I have a Simmons, I believe, that a relative purchased for me not more than a few years ago. It's holding up fairly well, but starting to sag a little around the edges, and where I use my elbow to prop myself up, the foam-topper inside the mattress, has started to break up, so I can feel the coils. My fear is, that 3-4 years in, the coils will start to expose themselves to my elbow.

Part of my problem is, I weigh... well... a lot. I can still get in and out of bed, but I huff and puff sometimes, moving around from room to room.
