So I had this hard drive - and it stopped working ****VIDEO****

So I bought a hard drive from a computer fair - and it worked fine for about a week - then it started slowing down, and getting bad sectors, and making funny clicking noises, and then not making any noises at all.

So I tried to get an RMA from Hitachi - OEM drive, they said - speak to your retailer.

So I tried the retailer - except they'd gone. Phone disconnected, and so is their e-mail.

So I sacrificed it to the god of curiosity. I was surprised too...

Video (8 MB DivX - you may want to save it first. It probably won't stream).

cool, thanks for the vid 🙂 interesting how the arms go right off the platters here and there, to save potential wear and tear maybe?

what surprised you?

The fact that it actually worked. It was essentially totally dead, when I had last tried to do anything with it.

3: No idea

There were 40 GB of mp3s on that drive - although most of them were corrupt and full of bad sectors even before I tore the drive apart. Presumably, that's also why the thing thrashes about like a dying animal (so many remapped sectors).
