Well, turned my PC on this morning, and nothing on the monitor. Hard drives are spinning up fine, etc, but no video display. Sounds like a dead video card, right? I unplugged it,re-seated it, but still no luck.

I need a video card today, and Circuit City either has the X1300 for 129 or the x1650pro 512for 199. These are AGP cards.

I don't do a lot of heavy gaming, NWN2 is the only 3d game I actually have installed ATM. I have heard the "300" product lines from ATi are awful, though.

If you can suggest something else from either CC or BB, that is AGP, please do.

Edit: the only AGP card my localBB has is the:

VisionTek - RADEON X1600XT XGE Graphics Card VTK X1600XT256AGP
256MB GDDR3 memory; AGP interface; dual DVI, S-video and composite video TV out

for 235.

tia.

I have an X1600 Pro with 512 MB. It is a decent card but I put a different cooler on it. It would idle at 60C!

Don't exspect a huge performance increase though. I didn't notice much of an increase at all over my 9800 Pro.

Same here. My 9880pro died just over a month ago and I replaced it with a x1650 512mb.

I wish i had waited for the x1950.

By the way, check out this thread. You can see two very similar systems one with a 9800 Pro and one with an X1600 Pro and how they compare.

I'd avoid any of those cards at the B&Ms like the plague if you can help it....BB for sure has gone away from stocking any "high-end" GPUs for some time, not sure how CC handles it now though. Both offer some high-end parts online but the physical locations seem to have toned down their selection significantly.

For that kind of money, I'd just put an order into Newegg today and you'll have it Monday. 7800GS OC AGP is running for $160 after MIR at Newegg and its much faster than any of the options you listed. There's also the X1950pro AGP which is faster than the 7800 I believe, but it goes for @$250. You don't have onboard or an old AGP card lying around to use in the meantime? Those B&M options are really a poor choice especially considering the price.....

Either that or a 7600GT AGP. They basically end up being around the same performance if I remember correctly. And the best part is that they will actually be faster than your old 9800 Pro.

Check the warranty. My 9800 Pro died a few months ago and when I looked into it, I found out there was a 5 year warranty. I sent it in and they sent me back an X800XT as a replacement. Not the newest card or anything, but hey, free upgrade.

That price seems too high for that card. My Sapphire X1600 Pro 512MB is worth half that used, give or take a few bucks.

I think I paid $140 for my Saphire X1600 Pro 512 six months ago...

I know what you mean, mine was $150something a bit before that, but you should see what people sell them for now, new and used :p

Right now I think its an incredible deal for a high-end AGP part for those looking to extend the life of their AGP systems. BFG/Newegg has been running constant promos on this card since I looked into it; there's been a $30-50 rebate offer going since August or so but the big price drops from $300 > $250ish > $209 is what has increased the number of comments from @50 to the 300+ its at now.

But ya as blckgrffn said, it performs about the same as the hard-to-find 7600GTs. Looks like they're in stock now, but they were impossible to find when I needed to replace my 9700pro. There was only the Leadtek and it was perpetually OOS. Right now it looks like the 7600GT are more expensive than the 7800GS after MIR, so I'd go with the 7800GS. The 7600GT has a faster core and memory clock, but the 7800GS has more pixel pipes and VS. Pretty sure both have some headroom to OC if you're inclined to try. There's also rumors the newer 7800GS are now using the G71 and with a little help from RivaTuner, you might be able to unlock the locked quads and VS for a full-blown 7900.

As for value, I'd say its the best performance-price for AGP without a question. The only card that performs better is the recently released X1950pro AGP but its running for $100-140 more. Certainly not worth the extra imo. And yes, they should both give you significantly better 3D performance and slightly better 2D IQ as well.

7600GT @ Newegg

7800GS @ Newegg

Edit: As someone else mentioned, you should also see if you can get your 9800pro replaced under warranty. It won't be a quick-fix by any means (probably take 2-3 weeks), but you could always sell it on FS/FT to offset the cost of a new card or stick it in an older PC.

waste of cash if it turns out it isnt the vid card.........it isnt the only possibility, unless youve tested it working with another card of course!

Very true, could be somethng else all together. I once had the same problem and it was the power plug on the back of the monitor had backed-out.

LOL. At least it was a quick fix :p

I have also had power cords go bad. Easy to troubleshoot, but also very easy to overlook.

Why is everyone talking about 1600 pro when he mentioned 1650 pro? 1650 pro = 1600 XT which is much faster than the 1600 PRO and so also quite a bit faster than the 9800 PRO... so go for it

If you pay $200 for either of them, you're getting taken. They're just telling him to get by for a few days and get something a lot better for the same money.
