So I guess its official that Window Vista will enforce HDCP and FUBAR all CURRENT monitors?

Just another example of how Microsuck is more and more sabotaging its new OS....I wander what target audience they will have left. With all the other requirement stuff I read the only people running vista are going to be enthusiast with uber expensive systems...just the ppl who wont put up with this sh^t....

Down with MS...I will run XP until I am forced.....I dont need eye candy on the desktop plus I will likely have to pay thousands to upgrade my CAD licenses...F that!!!!

I'll second that and by the time I am forced to upgrade hopefully I won't game nearly as much or almost all games will be ported to Linux so I won't have to install another microsoft OS again.

I'll third that ... but I wonder if all this is just scare tactics and wild speculation. Would Microsoft really go that far? I mean they can afford to alienate a certain percentage of their user base at any given time, but the whole HDCP deal would alienate a rather large segment of potential Vista customers.

At any rate, as I've said over and over for the last few months, Vista has went from a Mercedes to a Ford in short order which leaves me smiling at my Linux distros.

I don't buy that MS will condemn their new os to the dusty part of the back shelf at Compusa.

You guys miss it though.....most of their sales are through complete packages anyway, so now the package will come with a supported monitor. Think about it, evey computer at Best Buy and most systems at Dell and other stores come with a monitor or you get one almost free as a package deal. I dont think it will alienate quite as many people as you think.

Hehehe, some of you will deny this up until the last minute.

Don't forget that other hardware and software will be modified to implement hardware-enforced DRM.

You have been warned. Again.

It only matters if you want to watch protected hi-def media. And you're going to face the same issue on every other OS. Protected hi-def media FUBARs all current (non-HDCP supporting) monitors, regardless of OS.

What does this mean to the people who Buy a Blue-Ray or HD-DVD movie Use Cracked ripping software to move it over to there hard rive and then compress the 30+ GB files over to a 4.5GB DVD sized DivX / Xvid file ^____^

They can never stop these people from doing this. To do so they must inforace a LAW in every single country on the planet ...

<< And thats Imposable >> Unless America did a Hitler style takeover.

I don?t know why Microsoft is bothering .. the only people they are hurting are the people who do the right thing and buy there software

Don?t worry guys ... i'm sure you all will all be able to download and install a crack that removes the protection on your copy of Windows Vista ...

but all those Noobs who do the right thing and buy software will all lose out big time .....

PS: I don?t condone any illegal activity i'm just well aware of its availability.

Yea. like everyone watches protected media.

Look at all your episodes of Family Guy, The OC, 24, CSI, Friends, whatever it is. You think that's protected? You don't even need to worry.....

THIS ISN'T NEW NEWS. It has been well known for a long time that you would need an HDCP monitor to watch legit HD media. I'd love to take a swipe at MS, but this has very little to do with them. Vista WILL run on your current CRTs and LCDs. Vista WILL display all unprotected content the same way XP does now. XP WON'T EVER play protected content AT ALL, Vista WILL if you get the monitor to go with it. This is the result of the encryption that the people who produce media demand be placed on HD content. Vista is ADDING support for protected media, not taking something away from you. If you plan on obtaining legal HD content, you're going to have to suck it up and upgrade. I'm sure apple will follow suit with similar provisions in a future OSX version and I doubt there will even be legal Linux support.

Edit: Unprotected HD content will almost certainly be available on P2P, though this will be illegal. Another case of limiting paying users to a worse experience than pirates.

Most everything you say is true; and yet, I doubt any of you have the balls to forego protected HD content. They (entertainment industry) have you too addicted for you to care about the long-term implications of your accepting of their terms.

I agree. This isn't Microsoft forcing it on you, it's the media industry. If Microsoft wants to be able to play protected content in their new OS, they have to do this. It would be a stupid move if Microsoft refused to comply and leave their next generation OS completely unable to play the majority of high definition content when they've had a very strong stance in favor of protected media thus far.

Sucks for people who just upgraded their display.

Well, domestically, it's a straightforward application of the DMCA that makes such a thing illegal, and...

<< And thats Imposable >> Unless America did a Hitler style takeover.

...you don't know about certain provisions in various free trade agreements made with many other countries, requiring them to pass and enforce laws similar to the DMCA.

No, a Hitler-style takeover involves bombs and tanks; this fascist takeover, the authority for which is derived from WIPO, whose suitability for continued management of the international laws governing so-called "IP" I severely question---this fascist takeover is purely diplomatic and political.

Oh well, I've been pretty oblivious to the whole Vista thing anyways. Doesn't bother me.
Same here. This is the first NEW Microsoft OS release that I've snored through. Between WinXP Home, WinXP Pro, and WinXP x64 I'm covered.

microsoft knows and we know this will be cracked, their just paying lip service to the music industry so that they can play hd films on the computer

would you rather that the only way to do it would be through a stand-alone player

the average user is probably not going to care, MS is doing it for the technosavy who will want to use computers and their nice lcd monitors (and some crts)
