i was actually impressed with the work on the civic...i would estimate it do 0-60 in the high 5s....and maybe a 13sec 1/3 mile...its crazy what they do to the honda engines

There is nothing wrong with the Civic. It's a relatively low performing, uncomfortable, and depending upon who you ask ugly compact sedan, but it's cheap, reliable and efficient. It is good at those things. Nobody is arguing against that. Now spending lots of cash trying to make a car like that fast is what people think is ridiculous. Why not take the money and buy a nicer car to begin with if you want something fast? You could have a better looking, faster, more comfortable car for the money it takes to turn the plain, boring, front wheel drive Civic into a lean, mean, rice machine. There is nothing wrong with the car, but there is something inherently illogical with trying to make it into something it was not meant to be.

i own an import and i am currently modifying it to make 280hp...i really dont care if you call it rice...people shouldn;t get offended....you can't make everyone happy. once my car is finally done i will post pics and dyno times and strip times.
actually hondas are quite unreliable. Imports have done a good job of convincing people that they are low maintenance.

I just wanted to add that I've owned TWO Civics; an '86 CRX Si and a '93 Si hatchback. Both were fun, reliable cars that never broke down and got pretty good gas mileage. If i was looking for a small, reliable car for basic transportation needs, I'd buy another Civic in a second. It's a Honda. <--says it all right there.

Yes there is nothing wrong with a civic. To make a civic fast doesn't take much money that is why a lot of people purchase it and mod it.
For a cheap car it's quite comfortable and the performance is above average imo, and i think it looks a lot better than a Neon, Focus, or a Cavalier.
Does it make that much of difference to you what some people think of Civic?
Who cares, if you like the car then it shouldn't matter what others think of Civic.
I own domestic car and I could sense that you don't care for domestic car,
but I don't care becuase I like my car. Some of the peeps think that I'm a redneck
just because I own Camaro SS, but that don't bother me none, because it don't matter.
Point is, just let it go. Who cares.
And on another note, your reliability argument is moot. The car is relatively reliable (relative to competing cars in its class) however when you slap a forced induction system on a car with an engine not designed for that purpose, things have a tendency to become less reliable. Especially with higher boost pressure. I don't hate import cars, I drive a Supra; I merely dislike it when people think a Civic is a race car. It's not.
