I went for the second interview yesterday, which turned out to be a meeting with the director, and no-one else was invited- it looks like I made it through a 2" stack of CVs to get this, and I couldn't be happier to get away from PC World (UK) and from the customers!

I start in two weeks as a Field Service Engineer on £18k, with company car, laptop & phone. I enquired a little, and found out that the car is a two-week-old Renault Scenic turbodiesel (fantastic, I drive a 13-yr-old Citroen right now), and that they may help pay for a SatNav kit with an iPaq to drive it.

It's hard for me to describe how much relief I feel that I don't have to deal with rude people wanting refunds any more, or the same questions about wireless broadband sharing over and over again. Sure, I've no doubt that I'll encounter some angry people on my rounds in the UK, but that's to be expected.

Lastly, I'm 23, so you can imagine how excited I am to be getting into my first "grown-up" job with a company car- I didn't get to sleep last night until 3 in the morning.

Life is good :)

Who knows, maybe I'll visit ATOT on the laptop when I pull over for lunch ;)

That and I'm going to stick a 512Mb SD card in the iPaq and have MP3s on the go :D

[Edit] Just remembered, my resignation letter currently reads:

"Dear <boss name>"
I quit.
That is all.

<my real name>"

I wonder how he'll take it?

Cool. Have a nice tepid English  on me.

I got my first *real* job in April (I guess if you count News Director at a small radio farm a real job, then I got it at 20, but I don't).

My pay is only $22K/yr. That's like 11,000GBP.

I feel for you- I've had way too many $20k-ish jobs now- milkman, newspaper delivery, warehouse work etc. I hate feeling egotistical, but I feel that I'm getting my reward now :)

Well, I'm in a good position. I've got a foothold in the industry, and I only have a HS diploma. Once I get a couple of years under my belt and a degree (I start school next month), then my asking price may very well double.

Hey DopeFiend, good for you.

But which part of the UK are you going to be in? isn't 18k a year kinda little to be surviving?
Esp if you're in a metropolitan area?

Just a thought - you might not want to share with them the fact that your username here is DopeFiend. :D

Congratulations on the new job!

Thanks guys- I called them today and asked about references (not a problem but I wanted to check). Their reply was "that's okay, don't worry about it, we trust you"!
Damn... and when this message was passed to me, the guy I've been seeing about the job was outside flipping burgers for the company summer barbecue- it's some kind of holiday camp! :D

But thanks again to all your replies; life is very pleasant right now.

(On a side note, I just picked up an iPaq 2210 + SatNav kit + 256Mb card for when I go on the road; I love new toys)
