Well actually I knew when I bought it that I would need to open it up. It was a display model and somehow one of the drive supports got bent so the disc tray would jam. Got it for $180 shipped. Retailed for $1200.
Anyway all I had to do was bend the drive support back into shape and the tray opens and closes perfectly now. Since I had to take it apart I took some pics:

You can definitely tell it's a first gen player. They just used one of their SATA Blu-ray/HD DVD reader, DVD writer drives. (why would a blu-ray player need a DVD burner?) I'm sure if I hooked it up to my PC it would be recognized as such.
I also took some (blurry) pics of the HD DVD interface. It's pretty simple to figure out. When you put in an HD DVD it automatically loads the movie. You can view special features but they are unlabeled so you have to figure out what it is by selecting it. You can also select other audio tracks (such as a TrueHD track),
I didn't take any pics of the Blu-ray interface because that works as expected. I got this for my dad so he'll be happy with it. He only has 8 HD DVDs so limited HD DVD playback isn't that big of a deal.
