So I got my 955 up and running.

Nice, now get overclocking :)

There's no need. It's fast enough at the moment. I'll see after I buy W7 in October. Right now, I have to learn to use a new OS and find out how my normal programs agree/don't agree with it. Better to do this at default speed.

(Yeah, I know... I'm no fun... ;))

As for screenshots...

A little bit of me just died inside...

Nah, just kidding - enjoy the new setup :)

One thing I don't like is that the guy who installed it made the HS fan blow downwards towards my vidcard. I would think it more normal to make it blow up through the HS so the hot air is picked up by my back fan (which exhausts rather cool at the moment) and my power supply fan. Still, Speedfan 4.38 reports my core temp as 41-42C and that's only a couple of degrees warmer than my 4200+ was with a SI-120 HSF. This in a warm apartment (even with the AC on). The vidcard idle temp is 48C (fan 31%) so it doesn't look like it minds the heat.

Probably better to leave it as is.

I think leaving it is just fine as well, that is a good temp for air.

But it also shouldn't be a big deal to simply flip the fan on the HS?
Generally fans are installed to push air into the HS, so maye he just put it on backwards without realizing (I do that all the time).

C'mon, at least give the multiplier a bump to 3.4GHz. There's probably around a 99% chance that it'll run 3.4GHz stable without doing anything other than giving the multiplier a nudge. :)

I made a very similar upgrade from my s939 4200+ to my current CPU. It was a huge upgrade. Maybe even bigger then my 3500+ to X2 4200+.

Wow dude, we went with essentially the same setup and came from similar systems (mine was a X2 3800+) only I cheaped out and got a 1 gig 4850 as my monitor is only 1680x1050. MY psu is a cooler master rs-700-amba-d3 and I'm running 8 gigs of ocz platinum 1600. I haven't tooled around with my oc's yet.

I always buy my cpu+mobo+ram at the same brick and mortar Mom & Pop store since 1999. The owner is now in his 60s. Makes just enough money to keep his store open but that keeps him busy, out of the house and not retired yet.

I bought my 4870 a few months earlier, when it came out (it replaced a 3870).

So what was your main push for the upgrade?
I do a lot of video encoding so the quadcore is a beautiful thing :)
However, tmpgenc xpress keeps crashing on me in windows 7 every time it starts its 2nd pass.
Come to think of it, I think windows media encoder does the same....
I'm using build 7100 (rc i believe), can you try doing a quick check on a vc1 encode and see if you're getting the same thing?

Main reason was gaming. Oblivion stuttered when there were too many people in a city. I also plan to start the two IL-2 flight sims that have been sitting on my shelf. Plus I might venture into MMORPG territory.

Nice, my old system was so outdated I fell out of the loop a bit. I'm just now picking up stalker.
