So I got Magenta climbing cord

Not that I really care, and as far as Magenta goes the stuff actually looks pretty damn cool; but I ordered 50' of this and at the time the display picture was a very badass jungle green/camo color. Boooo. 🙁

Yeah REI's stock of 8mm perlon has been purple/pink for a while.

What'd you buy it for anyway? Rappel line? Tag line? Haul line?

I wish. Still haven't had the time to get into rock climbing, although I fully intend to this fall (University club), so I'm sure it'll come in handy. For the short term I'll be using this stuff to hang my bear bag on an upcoming backpacking trip, and just general use besides.

handy...maybe. 8mm in that length really isn't terribly useful until you're into the semi-advanced stuff. As a beginner, I suppose it'll be good for anchor rigging.

FWIW, university clubs are...interesting...organizations when it comes to climbing.

JMO, but if you really want to get into it, splitting the cost of a guided trip with a few other people would be a much more enjoyable experience.

I assume there's a story here? 😀

And the Outing Club is pretty badass. Several of the officers are highly experienced rock climbers, adnt eh club itself has been around since the 60s. It's not your average college "party and occasionally do something outdoorsy" club. I'm going for an officership this fall. Rock Climbing, Kayaking, and skiing are my shortcomings for the moment.

Many stories. I've been into rock/ice/mountaineering for quite some time now. Most of the university clubs I run across are woefully ill-informed. Large groups are rarely a good idea in climbing areas anyway for a multitude of reasons. Luckily I rarely climb at areas frequented by inexperienced or guided groups any more.

That said, I know nothing about your program - perhaps they're an exception to the rule. Hopefully they'll take care of you.

FWIW, some good reading to get you started when the time comes is "How to Rock Climb" by John Long:

And "Rock Climbing Anchors" by Craig Leubben:

Also, feel free to PM me with questions. I can answer more or less any question you may have about the activity and am perhaps a little too enthusiastic about sharing.

Sweet, thanks. I'll check those out.

I didn't know people really cared about the color of teh rope. That rope actually looks kinda thin. What is the tensile strength? Are you using a blake hitch?

8mil is really thin, but it's plenty strong. Tensile strength is usually in the 12 to 16kN range (2500 to 3500lbs).

Please don't use a blake hitch ><

14 kN according to REI.

And no, I don't really care about the color in the end. Jungle green would've been better though. 😛

Thanks for the linked. Bookmarked for future investigation. Like I said, almost a complete rock climbing noob here. I've freclimbed a couple of 20' rock formations, but that's about it. 😛

What would you recommend?

I've used a taunt line hitch since 1994. I haven't looked back since my first tie in with a blake. The blake doesn't bind up, un-ravel like no need for a figure 8 or half hitch on the tail.. so what do you recommend

I'm much more of a prussik or klemheist person because it's a loop system rather than a free tail with a check knot and tight friction. Should the check knot be poorly attended or improperly dressed, there's realistic potential for failure of the whole hitch.

That said, if it's not a life-critical situation, it's probably not nearly as big a deal. What exactly are you using it for? Is this being used as a self-belay, or just an ascension system? or is it just to adjust your attitude in space?

Edit: when it comes to ascension systems, I usually prefer mechanical devices anyway unless in an emergency/semi-emergency situation.

How nice for you. I make some nice side-income guiding on rock, ice, and alpine routes.

You still did not answer any of my questions.

I'm not trying to have a pissing match here - I'm open for discussion. If you're an arborist, your systems will obviously be a bit different, but a lot of technical rope rigging overlaps, regardless of the arena.

I tell you what, I'll pick you up a sun dress and a parasol and you can just sashay your pretty little self around the town square.
