Doom 3 unless you want to deal with the ball-and-chain Steam attachment to HL2.
Steam is Valve's way of saying "I tell you when you can play the game, not when you decide". It's also their way of saying "it doesn't matter if you own the media, I'm still going to force you to waste bandwidth when installing/playing the game".whats the problem with steam, and exactly what is it?

But you are.
All he did was voice his opinion, nothing more.

When it works, yes. When it doesn't, no.You do realize Steam has an offline mode, and you are only required to connect once during product validation?
Broadband has nothing to do with it, it's the fact that bandwidth is wasted when it shouldn't be. You can't just install the game from the media and expect it play it without being constantly harassed by Steam. If you're not already on broad-band, it won't be long until you are.
Your naivety amuses me. Nevertheless I really do hope you don't have any issues should you decide to purchase HL2.I have more than enough BW to waste while playing a game. I am not trying to flame or anything, but it sounds like you have a severe hatred of this game. Did a bunch of 12 year olds own you or is it that you really just don't like the game?

That's right, we're talking about the harassment of legitimate users who just want to play the game. CD checks and copy protection are bad enough but Steam just takes it to a whole new level. We're not talking about water or condoms here my friend.

That is a pretty general statement. Most people like DIII in its own respect. It was merely a recreation of the entire Doom saga. We knew that gameplay would not be good but graphics would be incredible, which is how it turned out.

More like 3-4 people feel the need to go into every goddamn thread with Doom3 in the title and proclaim to the world how much they think the game sucks with no regard to what is actually asked.

Most of the people who say they weren't scared at all during DIII are just making it up. If you play in the dar with 5.1 speakers you will jump... a lot! Im not afraid to admit it, i was constantly jumping.
The AI is also very good. FOr instance early in the game you walk back into the place you started out and into the closed room where you were admitted. Outside you see an Imp, he throws some bloddy thing at you and jumps up and disappears. Obviously you have no choice but to walk in that room. So with 5.1 speakers you MIGHT be able to hear it but eventually it drops down behind you and a lot of the time you simply just dont know Later in the game they will crawl on the walls and the ceiling.
Yes, it does get repetitive after a while but the game wasn't meant to be immerserive or redefine gameplay. It had 2 goals:
1. Scare the living sh!t out of you ---Acomplished
2. Create an Engine that will crush all others ---- Somewhat accomplished, we wont know until we see larger outdoor environements rendered.
