Steam is the client you have to connect to in order to play HL2 or CS. It can be kind of annoying but if you disable it so it doesn't start upon boot its not that bad.

whats the problem with steam, and exactly what is it?
Steam is Valve's way of saying "I tell you when you can play the game, not when you decide". It's also their way of saying "it doesn't matter if you own the media, I'm still going to force you to waste bandwidth when installing/playing the game".

You do realize Steam has an offline mode, and you are only required to connect once during product validation?

Furthermore, the days of internet connections that aren't active 24/7 are all but gone. If you're not already on broad-band, it won't be long until you are.

ok...I have more than enough BW to waste while playing a game. I am not trying to flame or anything, but it sounds like you have a severe hatred of this game. Did a bunch of 12 year olds own you or is it that you really just don't like the game?

But you are.

All he did was voice his opinion, nothing more.

I thought it was a legit question. One of the reasons I switch games so often is that there are quite a few young'ns out there with nothing to do but play these games night and day. I play maybe once a week and get owned by kids that I am sure are half my age. Its not a big deal. It just makes me want to either get better, or find a different game to play.

Lol. I have a 9800 pro on a 2500+ and I played Doom 3 on 1280x1024. Some of you noobs with the 6800s should defrag and stop visiting cheap porn sites.

What Qaulity do you have it on? I run it on 1280x1024 on ultra and only get 55 fps with my x800 pro in the time demo. When I tried 1280x1024 on high qaulity with my 9800 pro I get something like 35 fps or so, which to me is highly unplayable. Im running a barton 2800 @2300, and 1gig ddr 3200 @ 2t 3 3 6. My hdd is a 250 mator with 8mb cache, which I just did a fresh install a week ago. So I doubt you can be getting better than what i got. The 9800 pro is a great card for D3 but not at 1280x1024.

Doom 3 is $29 at Walmart now which I thinks makes the great game it is even better!

I love D3 and halflife 2 equally, If I had to choose one or the other I,d pick HL2 just because it took me longer to beat, but I play D3 more on a regular basis just because its a lot of fun to jump into a level and start kiliing stuff

When it works, yes. When it doesn't, no.

If you're not already on broad-band, it won't be long until you are.
Broadband has nothing to do with it, it's the fact that bandwidth is wasted when it shouldn't be. You can't just install the game from the media and expect it play it without being constantly harassed by Steam.

Your naivety amuses me. Nevertheless I really do hope you don't have any issues should you decide to purchase HL2.

lol, you're speaking like broadband is some finite resource that children in the third world are dying from a lack of. We're not talking about food or condoms here my friend. Put it in perspective. It's not a big deal.

We're not talking about water or condoms here my friend.
That's right, we're talking about the harassment of legitimate users who just want to play the game. CD checks and copy protection are bad enough but Steam just takes it to a whole new level.

with all the piracy out there I can understand if they are taking extreme measures. Does steam drain memory or cpu?

No, we're talking about a company offering a product. No one MADE you buy the game. If you don't like it, don't purchase it, but it's your loss.

I haven't had a single bit of trouble playing HL2, and I loved every minute of it. If you feel differently, fine, but you can't complain - no one forced you to purchase their offering.

I feel your pain man, I was a little annoyed when It took about an hour from the time I installed the first disk till playing time. I'm sure its worst than that now since there would be a lot of updates to down load.

D/L the Doom iii demo . . . if you really like it, buy the game . . . . there will be 10 more levels of the "same" . .. . .. MOST of us HATE this awful POS game (i think there about 5 or 6 Doom iii defenders on this forum).

HL2 is a very good game . . . . (it's true, Steam royally sucks - especially for dial-up users)

Don't forget a true "sleeper" Chronicles of Riddick: EfBB (MSRP- $29.95) . . . . much better than FC and slightly better (imo) than HL2. (FC has great gfx and gameplay but the story, voice acting, curtscenes and lack of anytime saves is crap).

That is a pretty general statement. Most people like DIII in its own respect. It was merely a recreation of the entire Doom saga. We knew that gameplay would not be good but graphics would be incredible, which is how it turned out.

it is MY opinion 😛

Doom III is "beautiful" but a stupid game . . . . John Carmack's Daikatana . . . . and you are one of the 5 or 6 that like this awful game . . .

i'll say it again . . . D/L the Doom iii demo!!! If you like it, buy it - it is already bargain bin - but don't expect ANYthing MORE than the demo.

BTW, The ending is a extreme disappointment . . . the EASIEST End Boss Ever. 😛

edit: if you want to try a "fun" game in the "doom" style like Serious Sam, Painkiller/BOoH is what Doom iii SHOULD have been (imo) . . . excellent gfx and also bargain bin. 😉

More like 3-4 people feel the need to go into every goddamn thread with Doom3 in the title and proclaim to the world how much they think the game sucks with no regard to what is actually asked.

letsee, what was actually asked?

Topic: should I get Doom 3 or HL 2?😛

you're the ringleader of Doom ii defenders . . . a very small posse that can't even keep a positive thread on Diii going for more than a few posts w/o thread "crappers".
and you appear to have a problem with "reading" also . . . .

(my) Answer: Get Hl2:thumbsup:
Diii is crap (except for gfx)

(imo)

😀

OP, d/l the demo and let US know what YOU think. 😉

I was so hyped for Doom 3... they told me it was going to scare the heck out of me. They told me it was the most intense FPS experience.. they told me it was going to be the greatest game evarrr.
Well, I foolishly rushed to BB on the day it came out and boy was I surprised. The game got repetitive really fast... I made it a point to play in the dark with my surround speakers and I played through the whole game waiting to be 'scared shitless'... I think there was only this one part in the game where I just flinched. The game was a huge disappointment... brought nothing new to the genre. Plus you get possibly the worst ever attempt at multiplayer gameplay...

Now , HL2 on the other hand... I got it as soon as I came out. And WOW! what a game. As soon as you start the game, you are put into this immersing world which totally reminded me of the movie Equilibrium. The graphics were amazing and no longer did I have to play in the dark. The weapons are just unbelievable (gravity gun with blades anyone???), the characters are so well done.... and the story is actually pretty cohesive. Add that to a robust multiplayer and you've got a clear winner.

Sorry but Doom 3 is not even worthy to be mentioned in the same sentence as HL2.

Most of the people who say they weren't scared at all during DIII are just making it up. If you play in the dar with 5.1 speakers you will jump... a lot! Im not afraid to admit it, i was constantly jumping.

The AI is also very good. FOr instance early in the game you walk back into the place you started out and into the closed room where you were admitted. Outside you see an Imp, he throws some bloddy thing at you and jumps up and disappears. Obviously you have no choice but to walk in that room. So with 5.1 speakers you MIGHT be able to hear it but eventually it drops down behind you and a lot of the time you simply just dont know Later in the game they will crawl on the walls and the ceiling.

Yes, it does get repetitive after a while but the game wasn't meant to be immerserive or redefine gameplay. It had 2 goals:
1. Scare the living sh!t out of you ---Acomplished
2. Create an Engine that will crush all others ---- Somewhat accomplished, we wont know until we see larger outdoor environements rendered.

i call BS on your "scared" nonsense. 😛

The first "boo" was unnerving (and yes, i do have a Klipsch quad system/19" CRT; played in the dark with volume WAY up. . . . )

after the THOUSANDth REPEAT of the SAME "boo" it just gets SICKENING. There is ZERO G-D variety in this game.

#1) failed
#2) were are talking about the GAME not the ENGINE 😛
(the engine is awesome, the game is retarded)

the only thing id accomplished was to rip money from former Doom fans

thumbs WAY down

edit:
WHAT AI? Diii is SO scripted 😛
. . . . try FC if you are looking for enemy AI. 😉
