So I got an HPI Savage X(nitro r/c truck)

i raced r/c cars/trucks from 1974-1992. my advice for nitro vehicles is-

1. don't run it too lean or it will get too hot which is bad.

2. stuff will vibrate loose so check nuts and bolts and loctite them or use nylon insert nuts. If this is a prebuilt hopefully it's well put together.

3. don't run it without an air filter.

be prepared to smell funny after running your nitro car... the fumes from the exhuast seep into your clothing.

i always put after engine oil in my car after running my car... kept it clean!!!

have a few filters and glow plugs...

oil will occasionally leak from the engine after running... so don't place it on something nice...

always make sure your batters are charged for your rx/tx (dont want a outta control nitro car running around)...

seeing you have a truck... i dunno how much you have to worry about shock setup and tire compount... i know my on-road nitro touring car i always had to worry about tires and spring weight...

learn your car... parts will break so make sure you know your car well... i built mine so i knew how to fix stuff easily after an accident or misshap...

break your engine in properly... this is very important... if you want the best possible speed and power...

keep an eye on the temperature... i have a ir digital temp gauge that would tell my the operating temperature of my engine, so keep that in mind... if u dont have a ir temp gauge spit test works... get some spit on your finger and tap the engine head with it... if it bubbles and evaporated instantly your running to hot... you also want to have a trail of smoke coming out of your exhaust on wot.

hpi is a solid company... they cater more to rtr..

also just have tons of FUN!!!

I own a first generation HPI Savage .21 It has been a great truck that has taken quite a beating. EngenZerO advice is solid. The one thing you just can not rush is the break in process. Take your time and go by the instructions. If you rush this you are going to rebuilding the engine sooner than you would like.

Invest in a fail safe. It will prevent a run away R/C if the voltage gets too low. It will take over the throttle servo and apply the brakes. I use one made by Venom. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHUH6&P=ML

Also after you get used to your R/C and have some more cash to invest into it pick up some rechargable batteries. Something like this would work great. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXVG17 I don't know if HPI offers a Tx battery pack so you might just invest in some good rechargable double "A" for transmitter.

Enjoy. Wrenching on R/C after a good day of bashing is half the fun. 🙂

The truck is already broke in and has been upgraded to the .28 motor. I'm looking for other upgrades, possibly a new exhaust.
