so I figured I would try to unload some old HT equipment on the local craigslist and posted the items for sale...

Within an hour I got an inquiry on the items...

basically asking if they were available.

I write back yes, and let me know if he has any other questions.

he writes back the following...
Hi,
Thanks for the quick response. Am satisfied with the price and
condition of the items. I will like to make an outright purchase. I
would have love to have a look but am out of town on a business trip,
so i will like to proceed in issuing out a cashier check to you and
upon the confirmation and clearance of payment, my shipper will come
for the pick-up at your location. So get back to me with your full
name, address, zip code and phone number so that payment can be issue
out asap. let me read from you soonest. Thanks

So...realizing it is a scam I decided to string him along and tell him I am in no rush and for him to let me know when he is back in town and we can discuss it further...and also what town he lives in as I could swing by if it was local and show him the stuff...

he writes back the following

Cant say precisely when i'll be back to town. You can go ahead and
send me your info

Thanks

so I am trying to decide if I just tell this guy to F.O. or if I continue dragging this out for a little while longer...

Thoughts on a reply?

I thought the same thing...I was tempted to call but don't want to give my number up in any way shape or form :D

Is there a way to find out any info about that number?

this is normal on craigslist. I got so many of these last year when selling my old tv. They're usually international though.

The number doesn't resolve to any US carriers that I found.

Maybe tell him you can't take a check because your internet bank always screws up the deposits by mail. Or give him the address of a police station with a sergeant's name. Maybe turn it around...act like you're unreputable too, and see if he's looking for anything else because you've got lots of hdtv's and a lot of other home electronics to sell, lol.

whatever you do, don't let him off the hook without wasting 40+ cents for postage to mail you that cashier's check. If everyone who recognized these scams would just put forth a miniscule amount of effort in getting the scammers to actually mail those fake checks, it would stop being worth their time to attempt to scam people in the first place.

He mentioned in his email that he would have someone come pick it up as he is "out of town on business"

Anyways I just emailed him back saying to contact me when he gets back and I will hold it for him...

Dumb ass writes back a copy & pasted version of his original email to me...word for word...

So I just copied and pasted my reply to that original email.

Someone needs to just script a bot to post ads and endlessly reply to scammers forever. Multiply this by a billion, and CL can just be automated.
