I know what you mean. I have almost 100 hours in vanilla. I'm looking forward to the expansion.

This is the problem with Civ, you get addictied, just 1 more turn...and before you know it you've played 10 hours and you have a headache because you've not had any liquids, and you have cramp and your ass has gone to sleep...

Good times :)

Despite the more arcade gameplay in Civ 5 I must say I do enjoy playing the game and do get addicted to it quite easily

Do you guys do scenarios or just start up a random match? Do you usually do any type of defeat, or just annihilation?

What's different about it that made you like it this time? I played for a few months after release, but it was such a step backwards from BtS that I couldn't keep going.

Before this thread continues, I'd like to request that this not turn into another Civ IV:BTS versus Civ V thread. There are other existing threads that debate that into oblivion.

I've said from the beginning I disagreed with the 'Civ 5 haters', that I found it more accessible and easy to get into fun, than earlier versions - for more 'casual players'.

If I want to sit down to a basic fun game of Civ, I'd lean towards Civ 5, though I've been playing BtS to try to see what it's like more since I hadn't played it much.

I like to do random matches just like I've always done with AoE.
I personally enjoy it more because it allows me to play the game as I please rather than as I'm told. :)

Right now I'm playing as Germany, have 4 cities and captured one from Genghis Khan; about to enter the Industrial Age. Allies with China, India and a couple of city states. Have begun to turn focus on wealth production and military while investing heavily in science and culture. My happiness level right now is at around 17 after building the courhouse in the city I brought down during war.

Oh, and yeah, let's not turn this into a Civ V vs BtS.

I maintain that Civ5 is an unrepairable fluster. But, the things I would do for a good Alpha Centauri sequel would haunt me for a life time. :/

Civ V sucked

Alpha centauri ftw

The design shop made that game (along with the NPC's "personalities").

Nothing beats the panic of glimpsing an enemy aircraft before you have airpower and rushing into the shop to slap together some AAA sentinals on a shoestring budget, while contacting your allies to see if any of them has Air Power to trade.

Or desiging a battalion of tanks that counter your enemies strengths and seeing the first ones roll off of the production line while you plan your continental smackdown.

Or winning the race to gravships....

I could go on for a while.

I didn't like how in Alpha Centauri it was easy to win by by forcing them to surrender right before taking their last town and basically made them a vassal for life, regardless of what happened after.

civ 5 was awful.

I'm sorry, it was.

the best civ was civ 2, still.

basically it is because of combat.

Civ 4's "stacks of doom" were awful.

Civ 5's 1 unit rule was actually a good one -- except the AI has no idea how to use it properly.

Civ 2 wasn't as realistic, but for gameplay purposes it worked great.

also civ 5 runs awful.

Runs just fine on mine, I enjoy it for what it is.

I finally sat down and tried Distant Worlds last night. That kept me up 3 hours later than intended, and I barely knew what I was doing.
