So how does a "steptronic" work? Just a regular thump on the gas or what?
It's a slapstick, you move it up or down to go up or down the gears with the exception that it's very responsive and it won't allow you to be in the wrong gear/speed combo.

Very much like an automatic, but instead of the transmission shifts for you, you chose the RMP at which you want to shift while staying on the gas. It has a built-in safety that won't allow you to screw up the transmission, so let's say if you gun it passed the resistance point on the gas pedal, it'll shift for you at red line while keeping perfect engine speed for the next gear. Down shift to accelerate, etc... same as you would with a stick, except you can't really screw up, and you don't have clutch to worry about.

No, they got rid of the POS that is ZF way back in 2002, the GM are much better trannys and are equipped on newer cars.

GM is a designation, it's not General Motors, 330Ci starts with E46s up to 2006, and received a face-lift from 2004 to 2006.

Can you give us more info on the location?
You notice how it's kinda empty and traffic free on a Sunday? Yeah, we'd like to keep it that way, besides it's not like it's a big secret.

Well, it is somewhere around Pasadena in SoCal. 😉

I approve of everything in RichUK's sig

I think Rich should come to SoCal, he'd like our roads and weather. We'd have to loan him an M3 though 😉

Looks fun but I still maintain one of you is going to crash, hopefully not a severe one but on those roads who knows.
