So I found a Ti-86 calculator in the computer lab

Why is this even a problem for you? Why wouldn't you turn it in? Would you swipe it off of somebody's desk while they were talking to the prof or sharpening their pencil? Geez.

Uh....someone LEFT it here. There was NO one sitting on that particular desk when I came in. We have individual stations here in the lab.

Are you suggesting that you think they left it there because they didn't want it any more or do you think maybe (more likely) they forgot it in a rush or something?

Probably in a rush.

So they left it for you to take because they are so generous?

Leave a small note attached to the station where you found it saying, "I found something here and turned it in at lost and found. If you are the owner and are looking for it, you will know what it is and you can go claim it."

Keep it and stick a very generic note that you found something and if someone lost something they can let you know. That way if no one claims it, you can keep it instaed of some dork in the Lost n Found keeping it for himself.

If you were at all interested in doing the right thing you would attach a small note to the station where you found it saying something like, "If you left something here by accident, I found it and turned it in at lost and found." That way the true owner would be the only one who would know what they were looking for to claim it.

That is a good idea. I would write the note as soon as possible if you only found it 10 minutes ago.

It's funny to see all the responses I'm getting here on Anandtech. Keep it up.

The fact that you're even entertaining the idea of keeping it is shameful. This is a big ticket item, not a pencil or something that the person is going to say 'meh' and not go back for it.

Your are legally obligated to try and find the original owner.

You might post something on a BBoard, then you can possibly with names of the programs on the calc to help identity the owner if they can name them.

I find it funny because of the types of responses I'm getting. I already turned it to lost and found. This was my decision before I even posted a thread here on Anandtech. Just wanted to see what others had to say. 😀

I once left my calculator in a building. Luckily whoever found it was honest and turned it into lost and found. Made my day when I got it back. Its stealing to keep it, that other person will have to shell out $100 for a new one. Don't be an ass, do the right thing. Turn it in.

So you are just a troll.

Either that or you don't want everyone to know that you were thinking about keeping it (or actually *are* keeping it.)

LOL. I left a note on that specific station. Hope it returns to the rightful owner.

I wonder if I can come back tomorrow and get the calculator back if no one claims it.

Wow. I hope you lose something valuable and not be able to recover it because some d!pshit thought it would be ok to keep it.

If you turn it in. there is about 10% chance that the original owner will get it back. If you keep it.. SCORE!!

Come on, thats not so bad is it? He didn't steal it. and if no one claims it the school will probably just sell it in the second hand shop.
