They PHotoshoped the picture so it looks better. Why would that be unethical?

Show me a magazine front page that has not been photoshopped.

And I don't think scanlines look like light-pastel digital noise, do they? I think they're usually just a white blip across the screen.
Anyone happen to know what the original might have been?

Maybe the LCD manufacturer added a scanline simulator, to make CRT lovers more comfortable with the new technology. :p

That'd be my guess. He was probably watching a tiny image on the webcast, and they decided to replace it with a full-screen picture of his baby.
