So I finally decided to give crab cakes another go

SAWYER

Lifer
I was at Red Lobster and order a meal that came with crab cakes, shrimp, clam strips and fish. Absolutely disgusting just as I remembered, never again. While bad, they were still not as disgusting as oysters.

FYI, Red Lobster is not the best place to go to experience good seafood, just as McDonalds doesn't make the best hamburger.

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't found any good crab cakes. 🙁 I'm a huge crab cake fan. Once I had some good MD crab cakes, it's been tough for me to find equally good cakes elsewhere.

Man, is THAT ever true! Living close enough to the Chesapeake Bay (SE PA) to get down there, I can attest to this. Far too much of what is passed off as crab cakes contain way too much breading and filler. They don't come close to the real thing, which is heaven on earth imho.

When crab cakes are done right, there's just enough bread to hold them together, they're just a step away from being a pile of crabmeat. And fresh crabmeat is delicious.

Well next time I am near the coast I will try some. I will be going on another cruise this winter, I will try some at one of our stops

You can probably find good ones in your area, but you'll need to go to a nice upscale place. A place that specializes in seafood if or even an upscale steak house.

Maybe here: link

Absolutely true. I also lived in Eastern/Southeastern PA and made a lot of trips to visit friends in the Inner Harbor. I hate it when a crab cake takes more like a breaded pastry than crab.

Do want.

MD is the best place for anything crab. Most other areas don't even cook them right. They're supposed to be steamed, not boiled, and Marylanders know how to season them properly.

Crab cakes are good. If you get them at regular chains like Red Lobster or Mac Grill or whatever, you'll get crap.

90% cake, 10% crab.

If you go to a decent seafood place, even just a chain like Mortons will have excellent crab cake. 90% crab 10% cake makes the whole meal 10x better.

This man speaks the holy truth.

When I was a youth, I worked as a delivery driver for a wholesale fish house in Spokane. MOST of my day was spent preparing orders...and cracking crab for crab feeds. On any given day, I'd be smashing 400-5-- lbs of snow crab with a rubber mallet. I was able to eat all the crab I wanted as I worked. 😀 I got so fucking sick of crab that I can barely look at the stuff nowadays. We get invited to crab feeds here all the time, (cold dungeness crab) and we rarely go.

GOOD crab cakes on the other hand are chock full of deliciousness, and I eat them when I get the opportunity.

Perhaps the best crab cakes I've had in many, many years were at Mama's Fish House on Maui...Macadamia Nut Crabcakes...mmmmm!

Dude, I love crabcakes. Those places are two places you SHOULDN'T go for crabcakes. Unless they have changed, the RL crabcakes aren't even made from all crab and they are fried shit. They may have something different now...

Try them at a real seafood restaurant sometime. 🙂

Lol, both!

Dissing either coast to favor the other is pure provincialism.

No, it's called reality. The Gulf Coast has all of the good shrimp. The West Coast has the good crabs.
