I don't like Mac but have to buy one for my wife. :( So yesterday I checked Apple.com and bought an eMac with 128M ram.

I knew it's easy to upgrade the ram on eMac, placed an order of 512M Kingston on Newegg. Well, next week I will deal with

this sucker. The ibook only has PowerG3 CPU, and Powerbook is overpriced. Hope next year I can have a new ibook or something.

Do I need to install anti-virus and firewall software on this eMac? If so, any recommendations?

I have no anti-virus on my mac and have never had a problem. There aren't very many viruses for it.

Considering that, as far as I know, there's never been a virus that natively ran on Mac OS X, I wouldn't be all that worried about it. And Mac OS X has a firewall built into it that works pretty well at keeping people out. An aside: the G3 is actually still a very good chip. I have one in my iBook and I don't really see any problems with speed unless I'm doing higher-end graphics work with filters and whatnot. Day-to-day activities run fine.

osx is based off bsd...unix. OSX w/o firewall or antivirus is safer that a windows machien disconneted from the internet... ;)
