i have an OEM install on my acer, but im pretty sure i set the admin pass, if not, is there a default pass for models or something?

ok so now im tryin partition magic/boot magic to fix the MBR, is there something else i could use/do...

There are programs you can use to reset administrative passwords.

Some live cds have this capability.. For instance Knoppix-STD http://s-t-d.org/index.html does (security tool distribution version of Knoppix). The command is chntpw.

Also probably those bart xp live cds, but I don't know for sure. Probably also boot floppies can do it. It's pretty simple.

I don't know for sure if it will help in this case though.

ok so basically i need to make something that will boot off my USB drive so that i can run fixmbr and fixboot...

my only burner is on the locked CPU, and its a lappy so no floppy, it has to be USB

I don't know which one will work for you. You may still have to download the password reset program seperately, or maybe follow the knoppix instructions for the knoppix-std install.

But here is a website that describes methods on installing live linux onto pen drives.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

So that's a option. I think that there is a mention of a windows version on that, although I am not sure.

Personally I have a pen drive with Debian installed directly onto the jump drive, but I don't have easy instructions on how to do that. (most on that page is 'live' linux versions with a read-only root like a knoppix cdrom.. They are compressed and fit more on a drive and are faster then installing directly to the drive, but they are usually uneditable so you loose changes between reboots).

edit:
I still don't know if resetting the admin password would be enough to make the windows restore stuff work properly though.

Well yeah, and everyone needs a copy. 🙂 UBCD4Win.....password renew, create new administrative account.

Follow his build instructions closely - neat!

ok so i found a usb floppy drive, so i think all i need is a boot disk with fixmbr and fixboot, but i cant find that, not even on bootdisks.com

If you get desperate, you can grab a livecd like Mepis and install the boootloader grub. I believe Mepis allows you to just install grub without installing the whole os.

yeah, doesnt work, i can get to a command prompt using the vista install CD, i just cant do anything while im there cause there are no dos commands like fixmbr or fixboot

Ok try out this tool. Its the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor. Its pretty easy to use, just tested it out myself. It allows you to set your own password on the nt box (although its recommended to just set a blank password). Just whip out a floppy, extract this archive, and double-click on the install.bat. It'll run rawrite.exe with the image file (the .bin file) and write the image to your floppy. Then just reboot and follow the instructions.

Then try the recovery console again.
