Good luck, dude.

If you back starts to hurt, just tell them you're not up to it.

Injuring yourself isn't worth it.

(I'm 5'9" 160 and I do manual labor during the summer)

Yeaaah funny you mention that my back has been a bitch off and on in the past. I managed to injure it in hockey as a kid and its never been quite the same. I really have no idea how it will do...

Dont forget to get one of those belt things they wear. ALthought it might make you look like a 5 year old in a suma suit. 😀

Haha.. wearing those over time will weaken your back. I suggest to go without and lift with your legs. You'll be fine.

How'd you decide on trying a moving company for a job?

I have a summer to kill. I've been hunting and the jobs availible to a no skill labor are...

1) Fast food
2) Warehouse
3) Moving
4) Landscaping

I find moving to be the most appealing...

Dude, I basically do Lanscaping at the Milwaukee County Zoo. I get paid $13/hour during the summer and the worst I have to do is move around some hay bales, lift planters full of flowers/trees, move around and lift 5 gallon buckets of water, do some digging/pitchforking, and use some basic power tools (chainsaws, tillers, etc.).

I'd much rather be doing that than lifting some heavy a$$ appliances and furtature.

Did you apply for the job?

..

Yes?

So what the hell is your problem?

Yeah yeah, I know. Its just...this is not the standard way of doing it. Haha, I'm mostly thrown off by that. I was expecting an interview...not being thrown right into it I guess.

It is an interview, your 'skills' are on trial here.. if you don't buck up you're done.

This is a moving company. You are not applying for a job at google.

data entry is you friend. look into it there's always some company that's looking for someone to input a few thousand entries into a database.

if you want to look bigger, try wearing a sweatshirt and some big pants or maybe some large windbreakers. hmmm....

And stuff a bunch of socks around your arms 😉

(and if your pants, if you like)

they obviously don't get many people applying for the job very often. that's probably why it's so informal. but no big deal -- just say hi -- it obviously isn't a true interview and you'll just chat with the guys and they'll see if you're well-suited for the job and they'll tell you yay or nay.

They probably have really high turnover too.

EDIT: Well... I guess that kind of says the opposite of what I just quoted 😉 (oh well)

go for it, if you want $$$

they are informal, nothing wrong with that

i am not surprised they want to "try you out" , for that type of work is seems fine

have fun and good luck! :gift:

I worked for a moving company. How big you are has nothing to do with it.

What matters is how fast you are WITHOUT BREAKING ANYTHING. you would be suprised the crap people can fit into places...... huge couches through tiny doors etc.

also you have to be able to pack the truck where nothing is going to break.

i'd call it half-skill half-brawn. it's not easy.

Frankly, I'm totally overwhelmed. Meeting 6-10 big bulky moving guys...and I'm 18 and pretty scrawny. Don't get me wrong, I know I'm in good enough shape to haul around couches and crap...but...

Do I cop out, or go?

You applied for the job. WTF is the problem?

hehe. if you survive your first day, dont forget to let us know what happened. 🙂 goodluck!

Actually - sounds like a decent place to work. Pretty cool they ahng out and have breakfast together each morining.

Don't worry about being scrawny - back when I was much more svelte, (5'10", 135LB) I was a block mason apprentice.. That's a SHIAT job.. shoveling concrete, moving hundreds of cinder blocks, and wheeling around full wheelbarrows of concrete. I was exhausted at the end of the day, but I made good money - and I feel I accomplished something.

It may be a good thing for you!

Not sure why you applied for a moving job if you have issues with your back though..

I know a guy who owns a moving company. He says he has trouble finding people will do the work, show up on time and isn't a pain in the ass to work with.

i think it's best to try to impress them by walking in with a giant chair on your shoulder. and when you sit down to eat, keep it there, even if it pokes other people.
