So I dropped a lens...

...it fell out of the case. I was borrowing it from a friend and before I even got to use it, the thing slipped out and fell down some stairs (cement). It is a 200mm 2.8L prime lens. Do you think it'd be worth it to send it to Canon to have it checked out (as i don't know what to look for) and calibrated? Or would it be better to just get a new one? (i see no cracks in the glass, pictures are fine [as far as i can tell], lens cap and built-in hood are cracked)

It can't hurt to see what the repair estimate is. What kind of damage does it have?

Lowest online price I could find was $695 for a new one.

sorry just updated as you were typing...hehe. Yeah i found one on ebay for around 600ish...it's not the II so it's a bit older.

If there is no damage to the glass or the workings of it, who cares? All it hurts is the resale value. 🙂

The best thing is to try it and see if all functions work. I dropped my EOS 50mm f.1,4. There was no visible damage, but the auto focus would not work. I sent it in to Canon and they fixed it. Total cost was about $120 as I recall. Well worth it.

hehe...yeah. If it were my own lens, I wouldn't care. But since someone trusted me to take care of it and let me borrow it, that changes things a lot. As i have not used this lens ever, I just want assurance that everything is fine (and i want the hood fixed)
