Yeah, SCSI is nice. Especially when it's on a 64-bit slot *cough*mech*cough*.
The cool thing was that I could switch over and play BF1942 smooth as Barry White's buttered ass.

IDE is just cheap storage. Or for poor people.
Most people here just download movie after movie and play a couple of games. That's about it. They don't realize that they could save a couple of bucks buying the 2.8ghz processor instead of the 3.2 and get a real hard drive instead.
Plus, many of them don't realize there are 64bit pci slots.![]()

Heh, once you go dual it's hard to go back. You can just feel the lag.
I've got an 80GB IDE that I keep all of my crap on, and an 18GB 10K SCSI for Windows and Debian. I'm thinking that the 160GB IDE might be a good buy so I can back stuff up on it. God help you when you copy from one IDE drive to another on the same controller though. God help you indeed.
My board has 4 IDE controllers, so I guess I could put one drive on each controller. I'm lazy though.Originally posted by: n0cmonkey
I do my best to not have two drives on the same controller. I'm stuck like that right now, but as soon as the Windows systemQ) is built, the DVD burner will go there. But I'll have to mess with Linux because it's silly about drive recognition (and sane in other situations).

The DVD drive and CD-RW drives are together and the 80GB is by itself. Once SATA II comes out, it might be time to dump the SCSI. :Q

Well, I've got a dual 2800+ machine...
I actually overclocked it to 2240MHz (about like a dual 3000+) for a couple of minutes just to see what would happen.
Why dual? Because I'm a hobbyist. I don't run many SMP-capable programs. I just do it because I like computer hardware, and dual systems are pretty neat. If I get some decent money rolling in, I may just have a quad Opteron system with a PCI-E video card in a couple of years. I'd really like to mess with some of the newer Sun boxes (I've never much cared for old hardware), but those are *way* too expensive.
Good Lord, didn't you just get the Gigabyte 760 board? You must be falling back-asswards over computer equipment.Originally posted by: n0cmonkey
Heh, I ordered a KT600(?) board that has SATA on it. I'm thinking about buying an SATA drive to play around with. But that means reinstalling all my stuff.
My new dually will have 1x 120GB drive and 1x DVD burner. And that's it for now, because I'm spending too much money!
hypermicro has some sata controllers, and they're reasonbly priced, IMO.

I need something to fill my last 64-bit slot... Hmm....
Here we go.![]()

I... want... dual... opterons.... grrhhh... to poor.....10 months, I'll have one.
check this out. Probably you'll know about this guy, but this system he spec'd out is great, fast, reliable and cheap. Through a couple scsi drives on that and you'll be set.
Similar to yours, Chaotic42.![]()

It's funny. People don't seem to like them so much because they don't produce great benchmark results compared to computers with faster single proccessors.
Then you see the intel crowd get all exited about hyperthreading like it's god's single greatest gift to computing, but turn their noses up at SMP systems they could of gotten for the same price.
That and people complaining about requirements for some boards to get ECC-type memory when that stuff is a good thing.
Oh well, doesn't hurt me none.![]()
