So, I decided to stress out my dually in Windows... (with Pic)

Nice. Maybe I should SCSI my new system... hypermicro has reasonably priced drives...

Yeah, SCSI is nice. Especially when it's on a 64-bit slot *cough*mech*cough*.

The cool thing was that I could switch over and play BF1942 smooth as Barry White's buttered ass.

I've got SCSI in one of my other systems, on 64bit PCI. I've even got a couple of extra cards lying around. Just no extra drives. ;)

In my SCSI system I have:
36GB 10krpm
18GB 10krpm
9GB 10krpm

I have an IDE drive or two in my latest desktop machine, and it's just icky. :p

There's no love for SCSI or dualies here on AT. I asked if I should get an IDE or SCSI drive (160GB vs 36GB), and the IDE won like 23 to 4. :p

IDE is just cheap storage. Or for poor people. :p

Most people here just download movie after movie and play a couple of games. That's about it. They don't realize that they could save a couple of bucks buying the 2.8ghz processor instead of the 3.2 and get a real hard drive instead.

Plus, many of them don't realize there are 64bit pci slots. ;)

Chaotic42 most impressive. What kind of monitor do you have? that runs 20x10?

A Viewsonic P95f and my cousin's Samsung 171v LCD. ;)

Heh, once you go dual it's hard to go back. You can just feel the lag.

I've got an 80GB IDE that I keep all of my crap on, and an 18GB 10K SCSI for Windows and Debian. I'm thinking that the 160GB IDE might be a good buy so I can back stuff up on it. God help you when you copy from one IDE drive to another on the same controller though. God help you indeed.

I do my best to not have two drives on the same controller. I'm stuck like that right now, but as soon as the Windows system :)Q) is built, the DVD burner will go there. But I'll have to mess with Linux because it's silly about drive recognition (and sane in other situations).

I want to build a dual mobile setup but the limited FSB bothers me (133 max right?). I'd love to see a dual 2600mhz machine:) Anyway why dual?

My board has 4 IDE controllers, so I guess I could put one drive on each controller. I'm lazy though.

The DVD drive and CD-RW drives are together and the 80GB is by itself. Once SATA II comes out, it might be time to dump the SCSI. :Q

Well, I've got a dual 2800+ machine... ;)

I actually overclocked it to 2240MHz (about like a dual 3000+) for a couple of minutes just to see what would happen.

Why dual? Because I'm a hobbyist. I don't run many SMP-capable programs. I just do it because I like computer hardware, and dual systems are pretty neat. If I get some decent money rolling in, I may just have a quad Opteron system with a PCI-E video card in a couple of years. I'd really like to mess with some of the newer Sun boxes (I've never much cared for old hardware), but those are *way* too expensive.

Heh, I ordered a KT600(?) board that has SATA on it. I'm thinking about buying an SATA drive to play around with. But that means reinstalling all my stuff. :p

My new dually will have 1x 120GB drive and 1x DVD burner. And that's it for now, because I'm spending too much money! :p

hypermicro has some sata controllers, and they're reasonbly priced, IMO.

And you can run Folding at Home twice in the same space it would take to run it once with a UP system. ;)

Good Lord, didn't you just get the Gigabyte 760 board? You must be falling back-asswards over computer equipment. :p

I need something to fill my last 64-bit slot... Hmm....

Here we go. :D

I'm replacing a crappy board. Not sure if I am even going to bother RMAing the crappy one. My system rigs page is a bit out of date, but I'll get around to it eventually.

Current count:
iBook 500
Dell pentium 133 (wireless access point/firewall)
Dual p3
Athlon 1800+
Athlon 2400+
SPARCstation 10
SPARCserver 20
Ultra 1e
Ultra 10

And plenty of other SMALL machines that I could trip over and die from, but they aren't running. I've got most of the parts (need hard drive and case/PSU) for a dual athlon 2400+. I think I'm going to get a Sonata and hope the 380W power supply is enough. ;)

I also have a VIA c3 motherboard and ram, but no case. Maybe I'll use an old beatup case I have at home...

I'm telling all ya. SMP systems are the bomb. Especially with nice hardware.

I... want... dual... opterons.... grrhhh... to poor..... :( 10 months, I'll have one.

check this out. Probably you'll know about this guy, but this system he spec'd out is great, fast, reliable and cheap. Through a couple scsi drives on that and you'll be set.

Similar to yours, Chaotic42. ;)

That's actually why I chose the Gigabyte board. That and someone had one in FS/FT :D

EDIT: I got the same processors and atleast similar RAM too. :p

It's funny. People don't seem to like them so much because they don't produce great benchmark results compared to computers with faster single proccessors.

Then you see the intel crowd get all exited about hyperthreading like it's god's single greatest gift to computing, but turn their noses up at SMP systems they could of gotten for the same price.

That and people complaining about requirements for some boards to get ECC-type memory when that stuff is a good thing.

Oh well, doesn't hurt me none. :)

Thanks for the link, beautiful case

What's wrong with nForce? They're too closed. They don't release documentation so the OSes I use can write drivers for them. I'll consider buying one when they come out. If I need another Windows machine or I break down and install Linux. Another Windows machine would be nice though... Then I can learn this AD thing...

MP and MPX don't require ECC or registered DIMMs IIRC. They only require it if you are using more than 2 in a system. ;)

I have ECC registered ram though, because I hate errors. :D
