I upgraded to an iPhone and decided to be AT&T's bitch for another 2 years... now what should I install?

Will the iPhone be firmware 3.0 or 3.1? (I ordered it this week)

What kind of iphone? If it's a 3GS then it'll probably have 3.0. If not it may have things even lower. 3.1 is too new for ATT to already have phones with it methinks.

It's the 3G S. I'm also wondering if I should order the Rebel Serpent? How is the screen protector included in that kit vs InvisibleShield or Power Support CrystalFilm?

If you ordered 3G then it is no 3.0installed yet you need to upgrDe to 3.0 and 3.0.1 but it it is 3GS U NEED TO INSTALL 3.0.1 and also you can start install iTunes on your computer now and start browsing apps store there are 50000 apps it is all depends on what you really want or must have
when iPhone come in tomorrow fill out your user info via iTunes after hook up with your iPhone to computer then start sync apps to your iPhone from your pc
enjoy your iPhone tomorrow

I have another rebel case, and the protector is pretty good but not great. I like the invisibleshield type better... BUT I would NEVER buy an invisibleshield. You can get the exact same thing at bestskinsever.com for a fraction of the price.

InvisibleShield is very nice, it's also like BodyGuardz. The problem with these spray based skins that you attach the screen protector with is that they have that orange skin bumpy feeling to it. To me it's ok, but it doesn't give you the best glare and sunlight readability. It's fine on the iPhone given how nicely it shapes up in the light. My iPod Touch w/ InvisibleShield is great. Some might not like the texture.

It gives more friction also, and I don't do as well on Flight control (same wtih my gf) as on her iPod Touch with a diff screen protector. Makes it freaking hard to play Defend your Castle also when you just keep swiping. That heat from frictino burns my fingers.

Edit: Invisible Shield scratches pretty bad too. I put it in with my keys and it does scratch. Even w/o my keys I've somehow managed to get some scratches. But it's not like a killer. Lifetime warranty states I can get a new one right? Too lazy to get a replacement though.

My personal preferance is the phantom skinz. It applies just like invisible shield but it feels far less rubbery due to being thinner plus it makes my screen look far more clear. I've owned IS on so many devices in the past and can definitely say I will never use one again unless they come out with a new shield on the level of phantomskinz

I found the protector that came with the Rebel Serpent to be horrible. I've just had it for about 2 months, and just replaced it with a crappy one that I got from Walmart. I keep mine in my pocket by itself. The one that came with the Marware sport grip that I had on my 3G was still good when I sold it. It lasted 7-8 months easy. Is the bestskinever protector on that level?

You need to install at least 6 fart apps, because Apple/ATT feels they are so much more important than Google Voice

i use a ton of apps, but the ones i use most are prowl, tipstar, fluent news (takes all the news sources and put it into one - can save for offline viewing too), facebook, npr news (live streaming too), kindle, scorecenter for sports scores (broken in 3.1 for me though...:/ ), twitterific to update/check out twitter, wordpress to update my blog, and multiple free games.

there are a TON to choose from..

firmware wise, i think it will be 3.0.1. if you want to jailbreak/unlock your iphone, stick with 3.0.1 until the dev team gets the 3GS working with 3.1.

My most used apps :

mail.app :p
iSSH
pushmail
iRdesktop
RDP
ping

.. so many games you'd go crazy! I like supporting devs and paying a few bucks for a game.

Fieldrunners
Bejeweled 2
tetris
monopoly
simcity
zombies attack
warfare inc
tap defense
crystal defenders
scrabble
geo defense
geo defense swarm
Oregon train

and the one that I play the most, and was actually free, is Lux Touch.

I've had jailbroken/unlocked iphones for years, with T-Mobile. I got on the AT&T bandwagon 2 weeks ago, my phone came with 3.01..and I just replaced that phone for an odd issue, and got 3.01 replacement as well.

Bejeweled 2. Damn time warps happen when you launch it.

Fluent News - Good news app.

Sportacular - If you like sports and want to keep track of the scores.

Shoutcast - Streamed audio channels

Stanza - Good ebook app

Evernote - If you use Evernote on your computer, there's no reason not to get it on the iPhone

Thanks everyone for the apps, keep 'em coming :) ~~ Also is there any tips on extending battery life? I unplugged at 8am yesterday morning, and by 4pm it's already redlining

For battery life:
Turn off Bluetooth, when you don't need it
Turn off the GPS when you aren't using it.
Turn off WiFi when you aren't using it
Turn off 3G - yes, this is painful - and go with EDGE. This actually has a pretty big effect.

If all of the above are off and you are in a place with good service and you don't make a lot of calls and just use the iPhone as a cell phone (no movies, not much music, not much using the internet), you can get close to 3 days between charges with a 3GS.

If you keep Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS off, do a moderate amount of goofing around with the phone and not a lot of streaming of music, you can get over 20 hours of use.

Alternatively to all of this, just plug into USB power from the wall or a laptop when you are going to be in a place for a while.

One more thing - I noticed that the iPhone's battery life improved slightly after a week or so of using it. Maybe 10 to 20% better.
