So I could just drop in a Haswell to my Ivy Bridge, right?

I have a desktop computer that hasn't been getting much use lately.

It's Ivy Bridge + GTX 560. I'm thinking about just selling the processor + video card on ebay, getting a Haswell, running IGP for a few months before getting around to upgrading the video card.

Eh, good idea?

That doesn't seem like a cost efficient upgrade.. Keep your Ivy Bridge. If you really want to spend some money, upgrade your GTX 560..

You need a new mb from IB to HW. Ivy Bridge is socket 1155 and Haswell is socket 1150.

Minimal improvement going from IB to Hw. Big improvement upgrading from GTX 560 to for example a GTX 760.

You don't mention what IB you have, but as long as it's a quad core and runs over ~3.5 GHz, it should be fine. If overclocked, you'll be within 10% of the top performing CPUs available today. That's how little CPUs have evolved in the past few years.

SB/IB/HW are all basically rough equals once overclocked (exceptions being the AVX2 apps that take off with Haswell). However, the IGP indeed is improved with each gen if you use that. It still sucks, but it's getting better every release.

Anyway, long story short, yes : Haswell is not a drop-in replacement, it's a different socket entirely. Even if it were a drop-in replacement, it's a useless expense for you. Your $$ is much better put towards GPU. I'm making an assumption that you game or do something with the GTX560 since you also say you're planning on replacing it with an upgraded card down the line.

Going from 560 to 760/7950/etc would be a truly massive upgrade. And if you have a 3570K or 3770K that is on stock cooler and not overclocked yet, overclocking them will overtake stock Haswell performance easily anyway.
