For some reason, I have a feeling that I paid more taxes than you do.

at least i dont take them back

hahaha then aren't you the dumb one.

Seriously though....corporations pay for most of that through their unemployment insurance tax...at group rates.

I've only collected 1 dollar from unemployment and I have been working for 12+ years.

370 a week is good, better than working minimum wage

ONLY 370$/week?

Christ! How much were you making before? :Q

$370 x52 = $19240. That's only about $5K above the poverty line. Not very much at all.

Uh, I realize this. But that is his unemployment payout. Don't they only a pay a fraction of what you made before?

I wasn't fired, if you're fired, you don't get unemployment "benefits". I was laid off last Friday, I guess you missed my "wow, holy laid off batman" thread. 😛

Yeah, it sux0r big time, but what can I do. It's the max that they'll pay regarless of how much you make before. Whether 100k in three months or 15K in three months, the max is $370 for Cali.

Being laid off sucks. There is no way around that assumption. At least if you are fired then you either worked for a total sphincter or you did it to yourself. I agree that the current amounts of unemployment suck pretty bad. Especially if you have a house payment you have to make every month. For what you pay in taxes to both the state and the feds you should at least get back 3/4 of what you made when you had a job. It is not like you don't want to work. Now it really sucks that by the end of the unemployment you still haven't been able to find a job. When no one will even talk to you, since you are overqualified for the job. So you are hosed either way. There aren't any jobs in your experience field, and no one wants to talk to you in any of the others. I thought that was the governments job, to protect you when you need it. Crap, then it really sucks if you have to pay for cobra coverage. There are guys out there at the job fairs with phd's applying for entry level posistions guys. So how is anyone else supposed to find anything?

yup, i second that.. just learned it in my tax course. your employer pays the unemp fees, upto $70 per employee per year or something.. but just so you know, you'll have to pay taxes on the unemp check that you collect 😛 you'll get a 1099-whatever from the govt.. think it's like 10% man, if yer making $370 a week sitting on your ass, "looking for a job" i really wouldn't complain "i'm not getting much.." sucks you have to be in unemp btw, but think of it as paid a lil less time off for 39 weeks. or until you find yourself a new gig
Wait, so I have to pay tax on unemployment? WTF? :| Where do my taxes go? Why are the unemployment rates varies according to previous salaries?

You are telling me you think that someone that paid taxes on 100k a year and someone that paid taxes on 30k a year ought to have the same unemployment benefits?

yup, and there are several reasons why.

unemployment is meant to keep someone afloat.

unemployment is a social program where the rich pay the poor.

and unemployment stops at $8000 of your employers pay (at least in VA). in VA your employer pays 100% of the unemployment tax.
