For occasional light duty use, simple things like sockets might be OK.

Craftsmen isn't as good as they used to be, but they still have lifetime warrantee on most of their hand tools. Other things are hit-or-miss (their floor jacks for example, their 3-ton jack is pretty good, some of their other jacks won't last a year). Still, it's going to be better than anything walmart sells.

Funny this comes up. Story: I can't find my god damn cordless drill, and I need to do some light duty drilling tonight. Sam's club has a 24V cordless drill for 40$. Unfortunately, they closed at 6pm today.

Solution: Went to Wal-Mart and bought a 12V cordless for 40$(Which is a piece of shit I might add). Will use it for the stuff I need tonight, return it tomorrow and buy the 40$ one from Sam's.

The way I figure it, they're the same damn company, and the products cost the same amount.. They're not losin' anything. ;) lol

You talking about this?
http://auctions.samsclub.com/s...nfo.asp?LotNo=80005518

That be the one. Weird, never seen the sam's club auctions before. Are you saying they normally go for like 25 bucks? lol

To everyone flaming me - Seriously? Is it that big of a deal? I don't even think it's unethical.

1) I'm abiding by the store's own return policy.

2) Even if the company just puts the product back on the shelf, which IMO is much more unethical than what I'm doing, you won't even be able to tell that it was used since I'm saving all the packaging and such. It won't even have a scratch on it, I just need to drill like 3 holes in some plastic. It will even have a full charge! ;)

3) I'm not going to lie and say that it doesn't work or anything like that, it's simply inadequate for my needs, which is true.

4) Like I said, I'm buying another 40$ product from Sam's. Everyone wins! ;)

5) Really, I don't care. It's Wal-Mart. It's not my fault they're asshats and could put a used product back on the shelf instead of sending it back to the manufacturer like they should.

:beer::)

Edit: And yes, I realize both cordless drills are trash. The one it's replacing is a 14.4V drill from Harbor Freight. It's served me well for several years, so apparently I don't require much in a cordless drill.

Although the 12V one from Wal-Mart is exceptionally shitty.

How are they asshats for putting it back on the shelves??? I'm sure you didn't say, "Yea I used it and am just returning it to buy a better one at Sam's Club". I can guarantee you didn't say it was defective either so no reason to send it back to the manufacturer so you're the one taking advantage of the system. You're the reason why Costco and other companies have changed their return policies. What's worse is that you think you did nothing wrong.

Hold on. If it's their policy to put things back on the shelf, how is that my problem? Apparently some don't like this procedure. That's great; don't shop there.

I haven't done anything wrong because like I said, I'm abiding by their own return policy. I don't like the piece of shit 12V drill, so I'm going to return it. Nothing wrong with that.

There are many ways that the drill could be better. It doesn't have a H/L gearbox setting, it doesn't have a battery charging cradle; the cord plugs directly into the drill..WTF? lol... These are things that I didn't realize before I bought it that would make me want to return it anyway. Seriously.

Does the fact that it was pre-meditated really change things that much? It could have happened that this cordless drill was a badass piece of machinery and that I would never want it to leave my hands. That's not the case.

They put it back on the shelf b/c people like you keep abusing the policy. You act like by just returning it, they simply give you your money back and everyone wins. No, sending it back to the manufacture actually costs them money...and the manufacture in turn gets pissed that they have a nondefective product returned since they wasted their resources looking at it. This all means higher prices, and in turn, everyone says all the stores are evil.

You forgot to add that stores end up restricting their return policies because of it and it makes it hard for people with real problems to return things.

In actuality, I really have no problem with them putting it back on the shelf. I would have a problem with them putting it back on the shelf if it was returned as defective, though.

Think of this as a free test! The drill works great(for what it is!) ;)

You see products back on the shelf all the time. The unethical thing that Wal-Mart is doing is putting it back on the shelf as brand new. They should mark it with a special tape and make it 2 bucks off. They probably still aren't losing any money on it, and the prospective buyer is getting a deal.

They could even mark it AS-IS and never have to deal with it again at that point. Shrug.

What if I was someone that didn't know anything about cordless drills, genuinely bought it, and returned it because I didn't like it? Would that be unethical? lol... That's silly.

Just for shits and giggles, I'm going to walk in there and say that I saw a better product at Sam's Club for the same price. They will still take the return, and then there is no way that I have done anything wrong at that point. Agreed?

Dont get me started on all the people who would buy pressure washers and generators then use them for the weekend and try to return them on monday. Same goes for ac units after the summer was over. GRRRRR.... I'm so glad i do not work retail anymore.

this is not some Wal-mart exclusive...I have had the same shit happen to me at Target, Kmart and Lowes....I always open shit and verify it's integrity when I purchase.

They just lost two dollars at least and some for their time and trouble to restock the thing.

No matter how you justify it its a real jerk thing to do. Buying something knowing that you'll just return it may be legal but its not moral.

You're right, I didn't word that right. What I meant was that they're probably still making a profit on the item. I'm sure just about everything in Wal-Mart has more than a 5% markup..

I do concede that they lose money, though. Shrug. I guess it's an abuse of their system, but I find it difficult to fault myself for merely abiding by their rules.

Like I said, I would be interested to actually say "I saw a better product at Sam's Club" when I return it.

If they refuse the return, then I guess I'm SOL. They won't, though. I don't even think they asked me any questions last time I returned something to Wal-Mart.

Fry's does this (puts product back on the shelves) as well, but IIRC they do give a slight discount.
