So I bought God of War yesterday ...

I played this game for probably 2 hours when it first came out, but my PS2 was broken at the time and I played it at a friends house and never got back to it. So with the 25% off used PS2 games coupon at EBGames I picked it up yesterday for $14.

I must say holy crap I am impressed by the PS3 upscaling capabilities. I honestly think this game looks like it could be a launch title game (graphically) for the PS3 or Xbox360 ... almost.

The whole time I was playing it I was just like "damn this looks amazing, I can't believe this is a PS2 game" and then was thinking - GoW3 is going to look incredible.

So now I have the pleasure of plaing through this masterpiece of a game in HD bliss. The PS2 upscaling is simply awesome and I'm very pleased at how good it looks. I plan on getting GoW2 eventually after I finish this one as well.

I thought it was fun as hell, and loved everything but a few of the platformer challenges near the end, won't ruin it if you haven't finished yet. You may love them since you seem to dig the platformers anyways. I haven't played GoW 2 yet.

As a somewhat related title, I just bought Conan for PS3 $29 shipped because it is an obvious imitator, and the camera seems to be a bit better judging by the demo, plus the graphic are obviously better, and the carnage is outrageously cool, You can pull their guts out, slice and dice them so all their limbs and head come off, throw them into spikes where they will hang impaled, ect. ect. Simple hack&slash fun, and I read all the Robert E. Howard books and many of the comics, as a kid, so it is wish fulfillment for me too.

I absolutely love the GoW series. If you are loving the first one then you're going to love the second one as well. Both delivered solid gameplay and hours of insane fun. Plus, I'm a sucker for Greek mythology and the like, so I was really into the story. This is the game that made the quicktimer events a fad, because it was implimented well and is fun.

That reminds me--one thing you gotta say about the PS3 (if you have the right model), is that it's backwards compatability is not only 100% effective with PS2 games, but actually improves the visual quality with upscaling (to 1080P) and the AA (smoothing). I recently bought my wife Baldur's Gate: DA for the original xbox so she could play it on the X360, and I couldnt believe the slowdown on this thing. It wasnt even when there were a ton of monsters on the screen--just one! It's insane! It's practically unplayable and that's frustrating when you throw money down on a game for that very reason.

That experience really made me respect my PS3s backwards playback. I should mention that I have one of the original 60GB PS3s, so the backwards compatibility is not being emulated like the new 80GB SKU.

(edit: type-o and model--thanks purbeast0)

fixed 😉

i also have the 60gb so yah i don't have to worry about it really.

i also love the freaking music and chanting songs that are in GoW ... the game is so damn epic!

I definitely agree the greek tragedy story line is excellent. I hear Shadows of Colossus is great too, been meaning to pick that up. As to the BC of the 60gb PS3, well said. My kid had me use a x-mas 1600 point gift card he got, to buy&download Halo, and anytime we get in a busy section of the game, especially the final warthog escape, it is a damned slide show.

GoW is awesome, it was actually one of the first games I picked up with a PS3. I got to the last boss ( I think) but haven't played it for a while. I still have Shadows of Colossus and DQ VIII sealed. Gotta grab GoW2 sometime.

This is why I hope Sony eventually puts more effort into the software emulation and brings it back into their lowest cost model.

The PS2 library is huge and full of good titles that are still fun to play unless you're an extreme graphics snob. And those titles are often $15-20.

I understand the business logic in removing PS2 BC from the 40GB though: it's harder to sell PS3 owners Heavenly Sword at $60 when they can buy GoW 1-2 plus Final Fantasy X for the same price.

GoW was the first game I got when I bought my PS3. It's the 80GB version, but I have no complaints.

all this talk people are doin.. I want to buy it now too. So.. how close is Heavenly Sword to GoW II? I played the demo for the first GoW game, it was on that ship. That portion was alright. But I was watching my buddy play through some of the final levels and final moments of the GoW II and it looked like an intense hack and slash side-scroll platform bit that was also 3d... it was weird, and awesome. And I have the original 60gb, so it should look great.

well the game has complete control over hte camera, yo ucan't move it around, so the part you saw may have had the camera fixed to the side view.

also there is a 25% off used PS2 games coupon at ebgames, i have it in my email and can forward it to you if you want.

i know plenty of people who have played gow1, gow2, and heavenly sword, and they all say heavenly sword is the least favorite of the 3.

If you like these kinds of games then you really should go pick up GoW and then the sequel as well afterward if you like it.

HS is derivative of GoW, totally true, but it lacks one thing--crazy-fun gameplay. HS was alright, but it just lacked the excitment and over-the-top action of the GoW series (and there is no jump--wtf?). Not everything was boring, I actually liked the motion control with the Sixaxis and the arrows and such. The cutscenes were really well done as well if that's something that matters to you.

I did the same thing when I first got my PS3.. At the time there wasn't much else once you finished Motorstorm and RFoM, so I started backtracking on the PS2 games I had missed out on..

GoW's were defiantly my favorites.. I also really liked the Hot Shots golf series for some reason.. ( no, I am not into anime porn )

there is an easter egg for GoW2 where you can increase the resolution a bit or something. search for it on google. i tried it on the ps3 and it works but i havent played it so i cant comment on the increase in quality.

Great selection! I sold my PS2 three years back and missed some of the best/last games to come out. In the past year I have "borrowed" my sisters PS2 and played some of the games I have missed. Here are the games and my thoughts:

Jak III ---> great platformer and a lot of fun

God of War I & II ---> 2 of my favorite games of all-time

DQVIII ---> Awesome.Awesome.Awesome. Almost a little too cutesy, but still, the game is perfect.

FFXII ---> Just starting to get into it. Really good.

Shadow of the Colussus ---> Amazing. Just simply great. And please, don't use a hint book. I did on two or so of the bosses and its more fun to figure it out yourself.

Devil May Cry 3 SE ---> Not really my cup of tea.

Resident Evil 4 ---> Masterpiece and a must play. 520p to boot too.

Metal Gear Solid 3 SE ---> Hated it. Waaaaaayyy to much talking, not enough playing. Also, incredibly hard.

Guitar Hero I & II. Both all-time classics.

I wish I never traded my ps2 for this stupid 360 i have. Now I have a 360 that sits there doing nothing. I loved the first god of war game. Was pissed that I couldnt finish the clone level on the hardest level though.

I played GoW on a friend's PS3 and was very impressed. I was really tempted to buy a PS3 until they killed the backwards compatibility.

Well, the 80 GB models still have good BC... and if look around a bit you may still be able to find a 60 GB. I was still seeing 60 GB models mixed in with 80 GB models right up to Christmas. I haven't specifically looked for one since then though.

austin, did you ever play Jak and Daxter?

that is one of my all time favorite games (and i think i'm going to actually buy it - it's $6 used) and I played Jak 2 and hated it.

i am curious as to how Jak 3 compares to Jak and Daxter, if you have an opinion on that.

Jak 2 was all dark and dreary and was similar to GTA, and it focused more on gunplay and platforming. i just hated it.

I couldn't get into GoW2. Kratos was just an asshole. Sure he was a jerk in the first game but you felt he was wronged and used by Aries so his anger made sense. In the second he is just a killer with no real reason other than enjoying killing - so Zeus comes and takes away his power. Personally I think that is fair and didn't really want to help the jerk get his powers back.

Yeah, I got a 60GB PS3 for Christmas (for my son). Might still be some out there, but you gotta pay a premium.
